Uniondale – Among the items covered – Brunell’s son makes a high school choice . . . Eric Smith in a zone . . . Cumberland picks up where he left off . . . Hofstra football and so much more . . .
Rex Ryan joked in the spring that he wanted Mark Brunell’s son to enroll at Summit High School were his son plays football. Brunell’s son is a good quarterback prospect. From what we hear, he’s going to Del Barton High School.
One reason he’s going to Del Barton is geographical. It’s right by Jets camp in Morristown, and the Brunell family plans on living in that area . . .
It’s really hard to come up with a lot of notes from the Jets practice at Hofstra because there was no contact. It was more like a walk-through.
The Jets will never forget that Santana Moss hurt his knee at practice several years ago at a Hofstra Stadium, and there is no way they are going full throttle ever again.
It was the kind of practice that seemed to be going in slow motion, with players pulling up when they were about to hit a teammate . . .
The Hofstra Stadium was close to full with over 10,000 people in attendance.
“This is where the tradition is,” said Bart Scott . . .
The closest thing to news that came out of here was a Steve Weatherford punt almost hitting Ed Ingles in the head. It missed him by inches.
That goodness it didn’t hit him. It was coming down pretty hard.
For you young readers out there, Ingles was the long-time pre- and post-game host on the radio for the Jets. Truly, one of the nicest people in the business . . .
After practice, Bart Scott trashed the NFL for even thinking about going to 18 games. He feels it’s bad for the young players who get to show what they can do in the summer. That was just one of many reasons he gave for not liking the concept . . .
Scott also said after practice he has been looking at video of Baltimore tailback Ray Rice for close to three months in preparation for the opener . . .
In the Hofstra practice, Kris Jenkins dropped on a zone blitz. The big fella looked pretty good moving in space . . .
Eric Smith is really in a groove right now. He’s looked so good this summer, whether it be in practice or games. He had a pick on a Kellen Clemens pass in the middle of the end zone . . .
Clemens had picks on consecutive plays to Dwight Lowery. One of the plays was over the middle and he looked like he was playing safety.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Lowery could be an All-Pro safety. He is so good at reading the QB’s eyes, and at safety it’s easier for him to do that than as a man-to-man cornerback . . .
It’s really a shame that Hofstra dropped football. What a perfect I-AA football stadium! Hopefully when President Stu Rabinowitz moves on to another job, they will bring football back.
Former Hofstra and Jets standouts Wayne Chrebet and John Schmitt were in attendance at the practice.
There is probably nothing that brought Hofstra more publicity than Chrebet, Marques Colston, Dave Fiore and Schmitt and all the other NFL players that went to this school.
How many times was Hofstra mentioned on national television in reference to all these players? Very, very often. It really helped the school . . .
Oh by the way, Jeff Cumberland was prolific once again, catching a bunch of passes . . .
