Jets veteran
OT Kelvin Beachum is from the “don’t put him in Canton” camp when talking about Sam Darnold at this point.
“Man, I’m one of those guys: Until you get hit in the mouth, I don’t know what you’ve got yet,” Beachum said. “And he ain’t been hit in the mouth by an NFL defensive lineman. So when that time comes, we’ll see.”
I give Beachum credit for his candor. It took guts to say that. It’s not exactly towing the company line.
But don’t take this an attack on Sam Darnold. It’s absolutely not.
“I’ve heard that he is a great person,” Beachum said. “I’m excited to get him in that room.”
Players want to win. And the veteran players on the Jets know that Josh
McCown gives them the best chance to win in 2018.
I love Darnold as a prospect, but I don’t think he gives the Jets the best chance to win in 2018.
He is just 20 years old, came out of school early, and is coming off a good, not great, turnover-plagued 2017 campaign.
He has some kinks to work out.
This should be a redshirt year for him, unless the Jets get knocked out of the wildcard race late in the season, then you get him some game action.
I know the players don’t run the Jets, but coming off a 5-11 season, actually two of those in a row, these players want to make a playoff run. There is no doubt about it.
What LaDainian Tomlinson said last off-season about the Jets’ QB situation still rings true this year.
He said you owe it to the Jets’ veterans to start McCown over Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, because they to win. And if they fall out of the playoff hunt, then let the kids play.
One of the worst things for NFL players, regardless of their position, is to be on a team where the QB position dragging them down week after week. It’s a QB-driven league.
Imagine playing for the Chicago Bears last year, with a rookie QB starting, after just one season as a college starter, giving Chicago very little chance to win. That rookie QB threw seven touchdowns in seven games.
Look Mitch Trubisky might be good in time, but with him starting last year for a big chunk of the season the Bears were going to a gunfight with a knife.
Hey, I understand NFL players get paid to play which is great, but I’m telling you, they want to win games very badly. On Monday mornings after games their bodies feel like they’ve been in a car wreck, but don’t seem to hurt as much after a win.
The food tastes better after a win.
Hey, I think the Jets are in a terrific spot if you ask me.
They have a quarterback they can make the playoffs with in McCown, and they also have a guy in the building who can be their quarterback for 10-15 years, but isn’t ready to roll just yet, but should be in time with some proper tutoring and development (by McCown and Jeremy Bates).
So they can make a playoff run this year with McCown, and train their QB of the future, who needs to take a step back to figure out the NFL game, and to work on cutting down on his turnovers (13 picks and nine fumbles lost last year at USC).
The Jets vets, like Beachum, clearly want to go with the vet.
Because they want to win.
And this shouldn’t be taken as a personal affront towards Darnold.
Not at all.
Terrific pick, but not instant coffee.
