Woody Johnson needs to tell Rex and Mike – don’t worry about the Sanchez contract, play whoever you want at quarterback.
The preposterous contract – an ill-conceived extension – guarantees Sanchez $20.5 million over the next two years.
There is no question in my mind that money is making the the Jets hesitate from making a quarterback change.
That is a lot of dough.
It’s one of the most foolish contract decisions I can remember in all my years of covering the Jets. Right up there with giving Santonio Holmes, the quintessential cancer in the locker room, $24.5 million guaranteed when the team was bidding against themselves.
Sanchez was coming off a bad season, and you give him a raise, and guaranteed money beyond this season?
The Jets owe Sanchez $8 million guaranteed in 2013.
Whoever negotiated that deal showed a lack of vision.
I think if Rex keeps starting Sanchez he risks losing the team.
If they don’t think Tim Tebow is the answer, then it’s time to go Greg McElroy, who was scratched for some bizarre season tonight.
With Tebow nursing sore ribs, and not even playing on special teams, why wouldn’t McElroy be active?
Clearly Ryan is still holding a grudge against the player for the comments he made on an Alabama radio station after last season’s meltdown, criticizing the attitude of some in the Jets locker room.
Ryan has a decent size ego, and those quotes from McElroy clearly still stick in his craw. He thinks McElroy made him look bad.
But if Tebow’s ribs were messed up, it’s a dereliction of duty by Rex to not have McElroy active.
I’m not putting McElroy in Canton, but there is no question in my mind he’s better than Sanchez.
McElroy reads defenses better and is more accurate.
Before the Jets-Pats game got out of control, the Jets were driving, and Sanchez threw an awful pick, a deflating interception in the red zone. He was throwing a crossing route to Jeremy Kerley.
True Kerley had a step on the corner covering him, but Sanchez was totally oblivious to safety Steve Gregory stationed right in the middle of the field.
It’s not like Gregory came from nowhere. That is where he was hanging out the entire play. Sanchez displayed awful field vision and instincts on this play.
Look, I’m tired of beating up on Sanchez. I like him personally, but it’s time for a change.
I said it in the last issue of Jets Confidential Magazine that came out after the Seattle game.
It’s over.
We have seen enough from Sanchez.
Playing quarterback in the NFL is one of the most difficult jobs in sports.
And it’s clear he’s best suited to be a back-up.
His field vision, accuracy, pocket presence and ability to read defenses, are just not up to snuff.
Matt Cavanaugh said before the year completion percentage of overrated. I disagree. It’s huge in the NFL. The good ones are constantly around 65 percent, and Sanchez is in the low 50’s You can’t sustain drives in the low 50’s. Too many passes are hitting the ground.
And if Rex continues to go with him, maybe you have to wonder if he’s the answer at the head coaching spot.
You can’t keep doing the same thing over and over again, and expect a different result.
