Somewhere in New Jersey – It’s time for a helping of New York Jets Website Whispers you don’t want to miss. Notes on Kerley, Landry, Revis and more . . .
Jeremy Kerley seems recovered from his hamstring injury, but now he might have a head injury. He got hit on the head by a microphone of a radio stringer. He’s fine . . .
I was talking to a former MLB pitcher at Jets practice today – Kevin Mulvey. Huge Jets fans . . .
For some reason, the last couple of days, Austin Howard was blocking Matt Hardison quite a bit – a free agent out of Delaware. I’m telling you – it was all the time.
I guess Hardison was playing left end on the scout team imitating the Carolina Panthers’ scout team. The Panthers play a 4-3.
Howard did a good job on him (I’m not being a wise guy – I’m just telling you how it went) . . .
I know Darrelle Revis is a heck of a player, but he doesn’t always act like the consummate team player.
His comments to Newsday’s Kimberley “K-Mart” Martin served no purpose and were somewhat irresponsible.
“You’ve got to do what’s best for the team,” the Jets’ All-Pro cornerback told Newsday, “and I don’t know if we’ve been wise in that department.”
He feels the Jets’ brass didn’t provide enough weapons for Sanchez.
By saying that, he’s disrespecting a number of current teammates, the current weapons, if you will.
It was kind of like when “Cro” said he was second best receiver.
I still don’t know what is wrong with a Santonio Holmes, Stephen Hill, Jeremy Kerley, Patrick Turner and either Jordan White or Chas Schilens as a receiving corps?
You have big-time playmaker in Holmes, a tall, deep threat in Hill, a good slot receiver in Kerley, and big-target, who is an excellent run-blocker in Turner.
And don’t forget, the Jets plan on throwing to their tight ends a ton, and they have a good talent at that spot with Dustin Keller, Jeff Cumberland and Josh Baker.
I think Revis is off-the-mark on this one.
To me, this is more about Revis being livid about this contract and wanting to tweak Mike Tannenbaum, than it is about the Jets’ offense being devoid of weapons . . .
Bilal Powell continues to improve as a blocker. He did a nice job of picking up a blitzing DeMario Davis to prevent a sack of Mark Sanchez . . .
T.J. Conley continues to be very inconsistent with his punting. This is a huge game for him. As I mentioned a few days ago, Carolina has two good punters, so if Conley struggles again, one of them could be auditioning for the Jets . . .
In the red zone, Mark Sanchez scrambled to the right side and ran in for a touchdown.
But this would not have happened if this was live action. Antonio Allen had Sanchez lined up, but as you know, you aren’t allowed to touch quarterbacks in practice . . .
One of the better passes of the practice was a deep throw from Tim Tebow to Joe McKnight. LaRon Landry seemed a little later coming over.
Landry has looked good in the box, but his play in space has been so-so.
I was told by a long-time Redskins observer that Landry is better in the box. But the Jets need him to help them in space. Eric Smith and Yeremiah Bell are good box safeties. The Jets need help in space.
I’m not saying Landry can’t do it, but so far, box-work has been his strength in Jets camp . . .
I don’t think the Jets have much of a choice but to kick the tires of free agent right tackle Herb Taylor, who was just released by the Green Bay Packers.
