A heaping helping of Jets Whispers . . .
Todd Bowles was criticized for not doubling DeAndre Hopkins.
I’m no special pleader for Bowles, but my question to those second-guessing the coach, is how do you double-team Hopkins, with a top-10 receiver, Demaryius Thomas, lined up on the other side.
Just wondering . . .
I like Sam Darnold as a QB prospect, and I think his future is bright, but the Jets social media people need to calm down with the hype. It’s not healthy.
As Bill Parcells always used to say, “Put away the anointing oil.”
Tweet from the Jets today: “Despite the loss, one thing is certain: Sam Darnold’s progress is skyrocketing.”
First of all, there are no moral victories in the NFL.
After the game, Jets left tackle Kelvin Beachum was asked about Darnold playing well being a positive in the loss.
“No moral victories. We lost the game. It’s the National Football League,” said Beachum.
He’s right.
And keep in mind, the Texans’ secondary is playing terrible, and this was the third straight game they gave up a ton of yards.
But that is irrelevant to me my point.
I know the Jets are looking to market Darnold to sell tickets and merchandise, but it’s not healthy for a player’s maturation process.
He has a lot of work to do, and he knows it.
Don’t put him in Canton just yet.
And a team promoting moral victories after losses isn’t good for a football culture . . .
I won’t fire Todd Bowles here, but it’s no secret he’s in trouble.
I heard from a reliable league source that it’s likely the Jets are going to make a coaching change, and the first Buffalo game was “the final straw.” The Jets lost 41-10 to a team being led by a quarterback they had just signed – Matt Barkley.
If the Jets make a change, you’d have to think Stanford’s David Shaw is at the top of their list.
Not only is he a successful college coach in a major conference, he has extensive experience as an NFL assistant.
He was a quarterback coach with Oakland (2001) and Baltimore (2002-04). He had some other assistant jobs in the NFL as well, and after his time in the NFL, he worked with Jim Harbaugh at University of San Diego and Stanford, before becoming the Cardinal coach in 2011. Harbaugh ran a pro offense at San Diego and Stanford.
David Shaw is the son of long-time NFL assistant coach, Willie Shaw, so David was around the NFL growing up.
He also knows Darnold well from facing him in Pac-12.
NFL teams are trying to mix in more college concepts into their offenses now.
I could be wrong, but if the Jets make a change, this guy could be perfect.
But the Jets would have to pay him handsomely. He currently makes $6 million-a-year at Stanford.
So it would probably take $9 million-a-year to land him.
Mike Maccagan knows him well from all the college scouting the Jets GM has done.
If the Jets make a change, this guy is going to be on their short list.
