Denver – How valuable is Josh McCown to the Jets?
Well, personally, I think the Jets might done winning games this year with him likely out for the season with a broken left hand.
The way he’s played this year, he gives them a punchers chance in any game.
Without him, I think they will likely lose their three remaining games, and it could get ugly.
As one player said after the game when told that McCown broke his hand, “That is the worst news we could get.”
People might be quick to say, well he only threw for 46 yards today before exiting in second half.
Well, I don’t put that on him.
The pass protection was substandard, and the receivers weren’t getting open. Denver has three terrific corner – Aqib Talib, Chris Harris and Bradley Roby.
I know most people don’t like to give the opponent credit, but these three cats were bawlin’ out there.
And you combine that with the pass rusher from guys like Von Miller and Shane Ray, and McCown didn’t have a chance.
With a guy like McCown, they have a shot battling quarterbacks like Drew Brees, Phillip Rivers and Tom Brady.
With their other two quarterbacks, I don’t see it.
Just look what McCown did going toe-to-toe with Cam Newton and Alex Smith the previous two games. For goodness sake, the Chiefs’ Smith threw four touchdown passes, and McCown put up more points in a 38-31 win.
On Sunday, Kansas City beat up on Oakland, and Derek Carr, the $25 million-dollar-a-year man, didn’t do nearly as much against that Chiefs defense as McCown did. And keep in mind, the Chiefs best cornerback, Marcus Peters, played against the Jets, but not the Raiders.
What I’m about to say might seem like an odd comment to make, but it’s something to ponder.
I think Josh McCown’s broken left hand might be a blessing in the disguise for the Jets.
While no injury is good, a broken hand, in the grand scheme of the violent sport of football, isn’t one of the more severe maladies.
And while he might miss the rest of the season with this injury, it’s something players come back from with no problem.
McCown has been taking an awful beating lately. Early in this game, he’s lucky he didn’t suffer a serious back or hip injury when he scrambled and had to be helped off the field.
The Jets’ offensive line has been very inconsistent, and he’s taking a lot of shots.
Look what happened to Carson Wentz today – blew his knee out.
With all the hits McCown is taking, he’s a candidate for a blown-out shoulder, knee or something really bad. I’m just keeping it real. He’s getting clobbered out there.
So to have a relatively minor injury like this, makes him a much stronger candidate to come back and be the Jets quarterback in 2018, which I think he should be, as opposed to a blown out knee or shoulder which would probably knock him out of the Jets’ picture for good.
To me, the level McCown has played on this year has earned him another season as the Jets’ quarterback.
And the Jets should pick a QB high in next year’s draft, let him compete with Christian Hackenberg for the QB of the future in 2019, to take over for McCown.
