My take on the huge Daily News story

Florham Park – This morning, I called Manish Mehta’s story today “a scoop of biblical proportions.”

The headline in the Daily News read – “If Geno Smith can stay interception-free, QB will secure NY Jets starting job.”

Manish Mehta wrote, “The Jets farcical quarterback competition will conclude Saturday night with rookie Geno Smith needing two turnover-free to secure a job that many people in the organization want him to win.

“Although Rex Ryan wasn’t announced a starter for the third preseason game against the Giants, The Daily News has learned that Smith will get the nod if he doesn’t suffer a setback with his ankle in the next few days.

“The plan is simple: Start the rookie if he’s healthy.”

Yes, I called this a “huge scoop.”

If Mehta was told by a source, with knowledge of what is going on behind closed doors at One Jets Drive, that’s impressive, since John Idzik has shut down the organizational leaks, or at least most of them, in Florham Park.

So for a writer to find out what the Jets plan is, even after Idzik has turned the Jets into a clandestine operation, that is quite a scoop.

We will see if Mehta’s report is correct.

If it is, it’s a huge story.

If not, the writer will have egg on his face.

We will see.
