This is such a bad idea, I don’t know where to begin. But I’ve got to begin somewhere, so here goes.
Perhaps this was done for click-bait (to drive traffic to their website), but a New York Post columnist wrote today that Brock Osweiler would be a good fit for the Jets.
The headline read – “Brock Osweiler perfect for Jets if they’re honest with themselves.”
Here is the explanation for that premise.
“Osweiler also makes sense from a strategic standpoint. Even though they won’t say the word, the Jets are clearly rebuilding.”
They aren’t rebuilding. This is media narrative that isn’t going to end anytime soon.
They Jets were awful last year and they got rid of some bloated contracts. The players with the bloated contracts didn’t help them win last year.
If the Jets are rebuilding, why did they host Patriots linebacker Dont’a Hightower on Sunday and Monday and give him the royal treatment? Is that a rebuilding move?
If they are rebuilding, why are they talking to Jay Cutler?
They aren’t rebuilding. They just don’t need to spend like drunken sailors like they did the last two off-seasons. They wasted a lot of money. It’s time for a different approach.
Look, I’m not here to defend the Jets. They aren’t in the best place right now and have a lot of work to do. But they aren’t in rebuilding mode.
How the heck can you got into rebuilding mode in the third year of a program? This is Year Three of MacBowles.
They just need to do a much better job this off-season in free agency and the draft. That is the bottom line.
Getting back to Osweiler.
I spoke to a couple of people over the last few months – one a former Houston Texan, now in the media down there, and another a long-time NFL GM, now in the media.
The former Texan basically told me Osweiler is very bad at seeing the field. In other words, reading defenses.
The long-time GM said, “Brock can sing the song, but he can’t write the music.”
What did he mean by that?
Basically that Osweiler works really hard during the week, knows the game plan, but for some reason it doesn’t translate to being effective on game day.
I’ve seen a lot of quarterbacks like this over the years, a few on the Jets. They work their tails off during the week, do everything possible to prepare, but then when the bright lights are shining on game day, it doesn’t translate.
The Jets need to stay away from Osweiler.
Like I said the other day, they need to lean heavily on their new offensive coordinator John Morton and quarterback coach Jeremy Bates. Ask them, “Guys, who do you want whose out there – Chase Daniel, Jay Cutler, A.J. McCarron – who fits the best in terms of the offense you are looking to run?”
If that is Cutler, they need to pull the trigger, and ignore the media and fans.
And especially ignore the media, or at least one column, and avoid Osweiler.
