Premium – More good stuff from One Jets Drive, including items on Holmes, Lutulelei’s video game partner on the Jets, channeling Atlanta and more . . .
Rex Ryan said Santonio Holmes didn’t mean any hard when he said, “Not to call these guys out, but their secondary is probably the weakest link on their defense.”
“I really think he certainly wasn’t trying to be disrespectful,” Ryan said. “I think what he was saying, (if) you’re taking a look that this front seven has been phenomenal. Obviously the middle linebacker is absolutely terrific. You’ve got two defensive ends that are really good. The one kid should be in the Pro Bowl, this Hardy guy (Greg Hardy). (Charles) Johnson’s been there and they’re really stout upfront. He said if you’re going to take a weakness it’d be the secondary. But typical if Santonio says it it’s going to be blown up.”
Everyone knows I’m not shy about criticizing the media if they deserve it.
But in this case, they did nothing wrong, and didn’t blow it up.
Rex is probably right when he says, Holmes “wasn’t trying to be disrespectful.”
But the guy is in his eighth year in the NFL.
At this stage of the game, you’d think he would be cognizant of what you say and don’t say to the media.
You don’t give the other team bulletin board fodder.
Especially when you are part of one of the worst passing offenses in the NFL. Why would you insult the opposing secondary, when you guys have so many issues of your own?
A Jets official once put it best about Holmes – “He doesn’t always chose his words well.”
Well put . . .
As if the Jets didn’t have enough challenges to deal with their current corps of beat writers, now there is a new one – a former Deadspin reporter, now covering the Jets on the beat for NJ.com.
You know darn well with a Deadspin background, NJ.com didn’t bring him in to be a choir boy.
He was going after Rex Ryan today about Antonio Cromartie’s concussion protocol.
It will be interesting to see who this turns out . . .
You get the sense talking to Jets players that they want to channel their performance in Atlanta when they visit Charlotte on Sunday.
The Jets upset the Falcons early in the season in their best road performance of the season.
But the problem is Carolina is much better than Atlanta, especially on defense.
I do think the Jets will definitely borrow one page from their Atlanta game plan this week – a heavy dose of throws to the tight ends.
You get the sense Jeff Cumberland could be more involved than he has been recently, along with continuing to feed the ball quite a bit to Kellen Winslow.
Geno Smith really seems to be in a comfort zone with Winslow . . .
Jets practice squad defensive end Tevita Finau is the cousin of Carolina Panthers standout defensive tackle Star Lotulelei.
And they often play video games against each other on the internet. Often joining them is New England Patriots defensive tackle Sealver Siliga.
All three are Tongan, and when they play these games, like “Call of Duty,” they are communicating in their native tongue, not English.
