Dan checks in with the second and final part of his Jets-Philadelphia game review, today looking at the defense with stuff on Marcus Dixon, Matthias Berning, Kyle Wilson and others . . .
DE Marcus Dixon has a lot of ability.
We counted five plays where he stopped a runner around the line of scrimmage. He also tipped a pass in the second half to force the Eagles to kick a field goal . . .
LB Aaron Maybin had two successful rushes, blitzing up the middle, one for a QB pressure and the other for a sack.
He might not have a coterie of moves, but he can fly, and if the Jets dial up the right blitzes, and get him free, he gets in the backfield in a hurry . . .
LB Matthias Berning finally got some reps, and definitely made the most of them. He does a nice job of playing downhill.
After crushing Mike Kafka on a blitz, he stopped a runner in the backfield for a loss. He also caused a fumble that the Eagles recovered. In the fourth quarter, he had three run stops around the line.
Berning was a teammate on LB Nick Bellore at Central Michigan, and it looks like both are going to hang around now – Bellore likely on the roster, and Berning on the practice squad . . .
LB Brashton Satele hurt himself with too many missed tackles . . .
CB Kyle Wilson had a shaky performance.
Wilson was beat by WR Sinorice Moss for a gain of 23 on the right hash. Wilson gave him way too much space to work in front of him. WR Riley Cooper beat Wilson down the right sideline for a completion, but Brodney Pool came over and crushed the wideout knocking the ball out. Then WR Chad Hall beat Wilson on a skinny post for a touchdown. Granted Pool should have come over to help, but once again Wilson gave the wideout too much space.
Rex keeps talking about Wilson’s improved confidence on the field, but so far it’s not manifesting itself in better play. We will see how he plays in the regular season . . .
In the first half, CB Ellis Lankster had a terrific PD on Cooper on a quick slant, and then he had a Pick Six in the second half.
Word has it that he’s going to get cut.
Even if he’s better than Wilson, the Jets won’t admit it. That isn’t how it works in the NFL, except in New England. Wilson was a first round pick, and Lankster was signed as a future’s player after last season . . .
CB Marquice Cole is quite a weapon as a blitzer with his 4.3 speed. He ended a second half possession with a sack on a blitz. He gets there in a hurry . . .
S Byron Landor (Baylor) and LB Eddie Jones (Texas) both played well, and both look like they have a chance to do something in the league . . .
While Kenrick Ellis is attempting figure things out, he continues to show great hustle for a 350-pounder . . .
