New Jersey – The news never stops. Time for a heaping helping of Dan’s Website Whispers heading into a great weekend of football. Lets go . . .
Getting some new assistants isn’t a bad thing for the Jets – it will allow the organization to purge some of the leakers.
Mike Pettine left for Buffalo this week to become the Bills’ defensive coordinator.
Recently, WFAN’s host Mike Francesa claimed that Pettine was Manish Mehta’s main source with the Jets.
“I have had people in the Jets organization tell me they know it’s [Pettine],” Francesa said on his show, recently.
Let’s say Francesa is right, and Pettine is a leak, well, I can assure you it didn’t stop there.
Do you think Mehta operated this year on one source?
In his Tebow hatchet job, he claimed to have more than dozen sources in that story.
I can assure you, his pipeline didn’t start and end with Pettine (if you buy into Francesa’s report).
Mehta played hoops this summer with a bunch of coaches and other Jets employees at SUNY-Cortland. That had to have been a great place to develop sources. They played quite a bit.
To his credit, Mehta has done a nice job of cultivating sources.
But with so many coaches (and perhaps some personnel executives) leaving, I think he’s going to lose some sources.
So either he will develop some more, or the Jets will come up with a better plan to deal with the leaks. Maybe the new GM will figure a plan . . .
As you all know by now, Mike Westhoff made some comments that caused a stir on Miami’s WQAM about the Jets handling of Tim Tebow.
“It was a mess,” Westhoff said. “It was an absolute mess. You can say whatever else you want, it was really a mess. I was very, very disappointed.”
Look, Westhoff had an excellent career as an NFL special team’s coach, but his last year with the Jets was “very, very disappointing.”
So perhaps he shouldn’t be casting stones right now.
*The Jets gave up Julian Edelman’s fumble return touchdown on Thanksgiving night – the first fumble return touchdown given up by Jets’ special teams since 1995.
*They gave up 2 blocked punts, vs. San Francisco and Miami, the most the Jets have allowed in a season since at least 1979.
*They gave up 3 blocked field goals, vs. Miami, St. Louis and Buffalo, the most they have allowed since giving up four blocked field goals in 2002.
*They gave up give blocked kicks altogether, second-most in a season since 1979, trailing only the six blocked kicks in 2002 . . .
Marty Mornhinweg is going to interview for the Jets’ offensive coordinator job.
Since 2006, he has been the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles.
But if must be pointed out, that while Mornhinweg was the OC in Philadelphia for the last seven years, former Eagles coach Andy Reid was the chief play-caller. So for most of that time, Mornhinweg had the title in name only.
I’m not saying he’s bad, and he seems like an extremely bright guy, but that factor has to be brought up . . .
While there isn’t a lot of positive things to say about the Jets right now – one thing is clear – they clearly have an outstanding defensive system.
Why am I saying that?
Well, over the last week, the Bills’ hired Pettine as defensive coordinator, the Chiefs hired linebacker coach Bob Sutton as their defensive coordinator, and last month, Texas Tech hired outside linebacker coach Mike Smith as their defensive coordinator.
So clearly the head coaches of these respective teams are impressed with Rex’s playbook and system, and want to run it.
