This wasn’t a great play call . . .
Mid-fourth, with the Jets up 27-20, Joe Flacco threw a deep pass to Denzel Mims down the deep middle, and it was picked off by J.C. Jackson. The problem with play is that it gave New England the ball back with 5:50 left. Also it was throw into double-coverage, and one thing you need to know about Mims, is that he’s not great on 50-50 balls where he has to battle defensive backs for the rock. He’s got great height and speed, but he’s not great at snatching the ball way from defensive backs. Now he will go up and get the rock and make a tough catch sans a tug-a-war for the football, but he’s not a ball snatcher
After the Panthers got the ball back after the Jackson pick, they should have been a TD to Jakobi Meyers, but Cam Newton overthrew him. This should have tied the game.
Newton had accuracy issues all game. It’s clear the two shoulder surgeries he had on his throwing shoulder has taken something away from his accuracy and arm strength.
But this play is illustrative of a big reason why the Jets record is so bad. Their secondary is very undisciplined, and is responsible for myriad blown coverage – EVERY SINGLE WEEK. How did Meyers get so far behind the Jets secondary? He’s not a burner. He ran a 4.63 forty before the 2018 draft.
The Jets couldn’t cover Meyers all game.
Like on a third-and-20, late, they gained 19 to Meyers, and then Newton ran for the first down on fourth-and-one. And then on the next play, Damiere Byrd had a gain of 31 on Pierre Desir.
The Jets’ pass coverage has been substandard all season, and it’s hard to win games in a pass-happy league the way the Jets play pass coverage.
I mentioned during the week, the secondary getting beat deep on wide open passes by the Jets’ offense at the beginning of both Thursday and Friday practices.
The Jets could have 3 draft picks in the top 32 or 33 in the 2021 draft, and a #1 corner has got to be one of the picks . . .
Weird personnel decision on the Pats’ last drive. A defensive coach decided to play Bryce Hall at cornerback instead of the veteran Desir, and on the gain of 20 to Meyers, to set up Folk’s 51-yard field goal, Hall was victimized.
I thought my eyes were fooling me.
I’m not putting Desir in Canton, but this was the most important series of the game. If you wanted to platoon them during the game to get Hall experience, fine, but you don’t play Hall, in his first NFL game, in a situation like that.
Unreal . . .
One of the strangest stories to me this year, that nobody is talking about, is why linebacker Harvey Langi, stopped being used, after a strong opener in Buffalo?
He only played on special teams the next seven games. Beyond odd.
He finally got to play again tonight, and was the Jets’ best defensive player, and showed what a big mistake for the defensive coordinator to not use him more, but this an example of why the Jets’ power structure can be problematic at times.
Where was somebody else to demand that Gregg Williams plays Langi more? The talent is pretty obvious.
Well Joe Douglas can’t tell Williams who to play, and Adam Gase takes a hands-off approach with the defense.
Did you see the Patriots’ second offensive series? It was the Langi show for the Jets’ defense.
Langi was shot out of cannon and stopped Damien Harris after a gain of one on a pitch left. Next play, Langi lit up Rex Burkhead as he hit a hole on a gain of three. Then Shaq Mason held a blitzing Langi on third down (declined).
Langi not playing much since the first game was screwed up, to be blunt . . .
