New Jersey – Mercenary cornerback Darrelle Revis is now a member of the New England Patriots.
What about the Jets? Any interest?
Recently I was somewhere, and ran into somebody with the Jets.
The rumors were already flying about Revis possible being on the outs in Tampa Bay due to his contract, and the fact they are going to play a lot of zone cover. $16 million for a zone corner is a colossal waste of money. The big money goes to man-to-man corners.
I asked if it’s a possibility that Revis could come back to the Jets?
“No, not with those agents,” said the Jets official.
So while there might have been some contact today while Revis was on the street for a few hours, there was no way the Jets were going to give the cornerback another mega-deal.
Woody Johnson has a great disdain for the Schwartz/Feinsod tandem. While Revis was with the Jets, this agent team, smeared the owner, and his organization, repeatedly, during the cornerback’s myriad contract disputes. I count four of them.
Leaking non-sense like, “The Jets aren’t committed to winning.”
It wasn’t an isolated incident. There were so many unnamed league source smear quotes from these cats, I lost count.
Whether you are a fan of Johnson or not, if you look back at how often the Revis’ camp slandered the man, would you want him back?
You see the Revis camp has a lot of operatives in the press.
The agents leak them information to help them write their stories, and in exchange, they carry their water.
There are a bunch of reporters who were “useful idiots,” for Schwartz/Feinsod to use an old Cold War expression.
In the past, the Jets had some football people who were very worried about the press – what was written in the papers, and what was being said on sports talk radio. And I’m not just talking about one person.
And this led to some splashy moves, or big contracts, that might have been done to curry public favor.
John Idzik isn’t wired that way.
He doesn’t govern by public opinion polls.
And he’s not going to make moves to appease the media or some fans.
He has a plan, and he’s going to stick to it.
Just like he’s not going to reach for a wide receiver at 18, if a player at another position, is rated higher on their board.
That philosophy led to the Jets picking Sheldon Richardson at 13 last year, even though defensive line wasn’t a big need.
How’d that work out?
Great.
The Jets just got out of cap hell, finally getting out of some really bad contracts this off-season, with possibly one more to come.
Idzik is a very good contract negotiator. He’s not going waste money – he’s going to sign tight contracts.
The Jeff Cumberland (underrated player) deal was very inexpensive.
Idzik wasn’t going to fall into the Schwartz/Feinsod trap being set today.
He and Woody have moved on from the Revis/Schwartz/Feinsod Kabal
Can you blame them?
