New Jets – TE Fred Davis will visit the Jets on Friday. He has multiple strikes. Update – Visit cancelled (according to Washington Examiner).
“I will still see other teams,” Davis said in Buffalo today when asked by the Western New York media about the Jets. “It’s a business. You always have to see all your options before you make a decision. I won’t make any fast decision. I want to wait and make sure I’m all the way confident and go from there.”
So I was wrong the other day about the Jets interest being tepid.
I’m surprised they are interested in a guy who has multiple strikes in the league’s substance program.
I’m surprised they are interested in a guy who tore his Achilles tendon, ending his 2012 season in mid-stream.
But I’m not surprised they are interested in the player from a talent standpoint – he’s a stud – 6-3, 255 with 4.67 speed – a great athlete.
He won the Mackey Award as the nation’s top college tight end his final season at USC in 2008.
He came into USC as a highly-recruited wide receiver out of Toledo, Ohio, but since he was a big receiver, he was convinced by the coaches to switch to tight end. But when you watch him, he looks like a big receiver out there, from an athletic ability standpoint.
But I’m sorry, not to be judgmental, but he’s behaved poorly too often off the field, which has to be a major concern for potential suitors, even the Washington Redskins. He’s the kind of guy that would make any team real nervous if you gave him a long-term contract.
Think about his track record.
He has multiple strikes in the NFL’s substance for smoking pot, which lead to a four-game suspension in 2011.
Don’t forget, when he first arrived in Washington in 2008 as a second round pick, at his first mini-camp, he overslept and missed a practice – AT HIS FIRST NFL MINI-CAMP!
And there is more, on January 10, 2011, Makini Chaka filed a civil lawsuit against the tight for an altercation between the two at a nightclub in Washington, D.C.. Davis was accused of dumping a drink on Miss Chaka. The case hasn’t been resolved yet.
There were disconcerting rumors about this guy coming out of college, and that is probably why he slipped to the second round. He’s was a first round talent.
It’s one thing after the other with Davis, but he’s a heck of a football player, and guys like this will continue to get chances. It sends a terrible message to kids out there, but it’s the way it is in the world of sports. We all know that.
The Jets clearly are kicking the tires, and would likely offer him a one-year make-good contract. This way, if he messes up again, they don’t have a lot to lose.
If the Jets could get Davis to agree to a one-year deal, they would be getting a potential steal in free agency, and they would keep him motivated, and on his best behavior, as he would be working for his next contract.
But here is the bottom line – Davis wants to go back to the Redskins. He loves it there, and doesn’t want to leave. However, he’s not happy with what they are offering, so he, and his agent Drew Rosenhaus, are trying to scare the Washington brass with these free agent visits.
That isn’t to say he wouldn’t leave Washington if another team gives him the money he wants.
However, his desire is to stay in the Nation’s Capital.
Update – An NFL source says TE Fred Davis will not visit the New York Jets on Friday. Down to the Buffalo Bills and Washington Redskins.
