Premium – Rex Ryan couldn’t afford to make a mistake with his third offensive coordinator. It would likely have cost him his job . . .
Marty Mornhinweg’s performance as a player caller against the New Orleans Saints was brilliant.
Rex Ryan’s first two offensive coordinators with the Jets didn’t work out that well for the most part, though Brian Schottenheimer had his moments.
If would have been three strikes and Rex is out if he had swung and missed on his third offensive coordinator.
But this time, it looks like he hit it out the park.
This Mornhinweg guy is good.
We all need to understand, that when you have a rookie quarterback, or some quarterbacks beyond that first year, the coordinator has to dial up great first reads, because the player isn’t (or never will be) adept at reading defenses.
Mornhinweg dialed up some amazing first reads against the Saints.
We will give you five good examples . . .
In the second quarter, Geno Smith dumped to a wide open Tommy Bohanon in the short right flat, and he ran for 11 yards.
In the second quarter, Smith hit a wide open David Nelson for a gain of 28 over the middle – no DB was close.
Late in the second quarter, the Saints blitzed, and Marty dialed up a great first read – Zach Sudfeld slipped off the line on the left side, Smith hit him on the short left side, and he ran for 20 yards.
Late in the second quarter, Marty called a bubble screen to Greg Salas on the left side that gained 12 yards.
Early in the third quarter, Smith threw another bubble screen to Salas on the left side, and he took it 41 yards.
There is no question a good running game helps, but that notwithstanding, Marty did a masterful job of using Saints defensive tendencies against them, and burning them with great first read passes.
Like a lot of young quarterbacks, Smith desperately wants his first read to be open because he doesn’t want to have to go through his progression scans.
We will give you an example that almost had a disastrous result.
Early in the third quarter, Smith was so married to his first read, he threw into triple coverage (CB Corey White, CB Jabari Greer and LB David Hawthorne) to Nelson, and he is lucky it wasn’t picked off.
So with a rookie quarterback (or some young veterans), the coordinator has to bring his A-Game every week. They have to be a puppeteer with the youngster – reading the defense and calling ideal first reads . . .
The Jets’ defensive line has been so dominant, they are leading to quite a few false starts from opponents.
The opposing offensive lineman are getting intimidated by Mo Wilkerson and company, and at times jumping the snap count because they are antsy.
We will give you a perfect example from the Jets-Saints game.
In the fourth quarter, Wilkerson and Quinton Coples both lined up over Saints left tackle Charles Brown, he jumped and was called for a false start.
Can you imagine what was going through Browns’ mind with Wilkerson and Coples both breathing down his neck?
