Indianapolis – WE have some notes today from the Combine with items on Jarvis Jones, Barkevious Mingo, Sam Montgomery and more . . .
While Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones played the last two seasons with Spinal Stenosis, and didn’t have any problems, he knows he has to stay on top of things.
“I have to be careful with my technique and how I play the game,” Jones said.
So he feels that tackling and tacking on blocks with proper technique can help him alleviate potential problems . . .
Manti Te’o did so other interviews aside from the podium at the combine – no extra radio or television interviews, like so often happens after the podium.
And unlike other players, he came into the media room from a back entrance – so no reporters could follow him in and out of the room . . .
While more attention is paid to LSU defensive end Barkevious Mingo, some think Sam Montgomery is the better player.
“As far as Mingo is concerned, he’s 230 pounds,” Mike Mayock said. “He’s got a little stiffness to him. He obviously runs very fast. When the ball goes away from him, he’s fantastic. He’s a run and chase linebacker. He’s got upside as a pass rusher.
“I just don’t see a top 10 guy today. To me I’d feel much more comfortable with him as a developmental 3-4 outside linebacker. Somebody that would go somewhere between 25 and 40. I know everybody’s got him in the Top 10, but I just don’t see it right now.
“Montgomery. I like him a lot. I think he’s a potential late 1 to early 2. Sam Montgomery, the defensive end from LSU – Barkevious Mingo gets a lot more of the attention, but I feel like Sam Montgomery brings it every snap more than Mingo does.”
I had a chance to spend some time with Montgomery during his time with the press today.
He’s the kind of guy you want on your team – he’s 6-3, 262 pounds with almost no fat, he’s got a great motor, he’s a leader, he’s very tough, has terrific stamina (does some of his best work in the fourth quarter) and he’s wise beyond his years.
He had more sacks than Mingo this year.
After Montgomery was done with the press he went to Mingo’s press conference to mess around with his close friend a little. You can see the photo of that on his page . . .
With the departure of Bart Scott and the uncertainty about what DeMario Davis is going to do, this is a good time for the Jets to add another 3-4 ILB, and Rutgers Steve Beauharnais (6-2, 240) would make a nice fourth or fifth round pick.
The Saddle Brook, NJ-native is smart, tough and focused. He’s all-business. He is good at locating the football and makes a lot of tackles . . .
FSU DE Bjoern Werner did get to play some 3-4 OLB while in college due to an injury to a teammate, so he has experience at the spot.
If he runs well in the 40, I think the Jets have to think long and hard about this kid at nine.
I don’t know if he will be a superstar, but he’s a mature, smart, hard-working player with natural pass rushing skills who is a very safe pick.
It’s hard seeing this kid being a bust.
He’s is the kind of guy you want on your football team.
The Berlin-native loves this country.
“I love America – I love the culture,” Werner.
He fell in love with football watching the Berlin team in the old NFL Europe. He went to a lot of their games.
