New Jersey – This uncomfortable story continues to rear its ugly head. I wish it would go away. It’s tedious to cover, and was certainly preventable . . .
As I mentioned yesterday, this Darrelle Revis story stinks for everyone involved – the Jets, the player (though he’s very wealthy, but his image is taking a big hit) and the media.
I’m talking about the struggles on the field of an iconic player.
And the press conferences with him are getting tough to take.
When an iconic players is continually asked why he’s struggling, it’s tough to be around these pressers.
Look, most of wish we had Revis’ money, but somebody’s name is pretty important also, and his is getting dragged through the mud.
Today Revis was asked about this tweet from Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole:
“As I reported earlier this week, #Jets CB Darrelle Revis didn’t workout hard this offseason. Source said ominously: “You’ll see. You’ll see.’”
Cole has long been a media surrogate for Revis’ former agents Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod.
Asked if he thought the report came from Schwartz and Feinsod, Revis said, “No doubt. I knew where it came from. I definitely knew where it came from. Like I said, it’s a shot.”
But honestly, I don’t think Revis getting beat deep in each of the first two games has anything to do with his conditioning.
First of all, even if he didn’t report to the Jets in great shape, he’s been working out with the team for almost two months. so he’s certainly in shape now.
Was Revis in bad shape last year when he got beat deep by D’Andre Hopkins in Houston?
No.
Revis is a 31-year-old cornerback who doesn’t run as well as he used to.
That is why he was beat deep in each of the first two games.
It’s not related to conditioning.
I would have moved him to safety last off-season, but from that wasn’t going to happen. Too much money involved.
I hate covering this story, and I’m sure you guys are tired of reading about it.
But to give a 30-year-old cornerback a 5-year, $70 million contract with $39 million contract was just really bad football business.
A writer said to me yesterday about the signing, “It made the Jets relevant again.”
That is concept I don’t understand. Big signings don’t make NFL teams relevant. To me, that is ridiculous theory. But perhaps the signing helped the Jets sell tickets last off-season. I’m not into signings to sell tickets. I’m believe in signings that will help you win a championship. I’m weird that way . . .
Bryce Petty’s injured shoulder is doing much better. I saw him today throwing the football pretty hard at targets set up on the practice field . . .
Brandon Marshall didn’t practice today due to knee and foot issues. I did see him in uniform catching balls on the Juggs Machine.
He was able to go into the city to tape “Inside the NFL” this week, so it stands to reason he should be able to play on Sunday . . .
Last week, the Jets released defensive tackle Claude Pelon from the practice squad and signed tight end Braedon Bowman to take his place.
I saw Pelon’s locker today, and all this stuff is still in it, so it stands to reason he’s coming back.
Pelon has tremendous potential; he’s a 6-4, 300-pound defensive tackle who is very light on his feet . . .
