Q-and-A with Rex Ryan about being retained as coach

Q)When did you find out your were coming back?

Ryan: Mr. Johnson and (GM) John (Idzik) told me before the game. That was good. I’ll say this: I love being the head coach of the New York Jets – plain and simple. You put everything you got into it. I know we (haven’t gone) to the playoffs in three straight years and that bothers me. No question. We’re 8-8. But we came here with that purpose. We wanted to win this game and our guys I’m super proud of.”

Q)When did management tell you exactly?

Ryan: Right before the game. Right before we went out for warm-ups.

Q)What were the emotions of the team when it was announced to them you’d be returning?

Ryan: I’m not a very emotional guy (laughing). I’m Irish. Ok, I’ll admit – I cried at my own wedding (laughing). It’s just that I’m proud of the guys the way they fought.

Q)Have you discussed a contract extension with the management?

Ryan: I think organizationally we’re not going to discuss my contract. I’m just happy to get this win.

Q)Have you agreed with the Jets’ management in principle on a contract extension?

Ryan: Guys, I’m under contract. It says that I’m getting paid.

Q)Do you have full control over your coaching staff?

Ryan: Guys, I’ve got pretty good control over it.
