So are the 49ers interested in Darrelle Revis or not? The Daily News and Yahoo Sports say they are. 49ers sources continue to downplay it to ESPN . . .
ESPN’s Ed Werder is being used in the studio more as an NFL Insider.
He was on a couple of ESPN shows today and asked about the Revis’ situation, and what he’s hearing.
Reading the tea leaves, he seemed to get his info from Revis’ agents (like many).
He made it clear the Jets have had no communication with Revis’ agents regarding trade talks (who else could he get that from aside from Revis’ agent?)
Why should they?
There is good a chance that what that info shared here would be leaked to their advantage.
The less you tell these people the better.
The reason Werder brought up this point about sharing potential trade information with Revis’ agents, is to perhaps find out if the new club would be able to reach a long-term deal with the player.
That isn’t a priority for Idzik right now.
John is a really smart man – he’s not going to get involved in a tit-for-tat with Schwartz-Feinsod that others have.
They can chirp all they want. John’s not going to say a word.
He’s not going there.
And Idzik has made it clear – the most important thing right now is for Revis to get healthy. Everything else pales in comparison (perhaps even a trade, though he won’t say that).
And you notice San Francisco keeps downplaying their interest through ESPN reporters, with a team official telling Chris Mortensen their interest is “.001 on a scale of 1-10.”
Notice they left wiggle room. They didn’t totally rule it out.
They are posturing – they want to scare the Jets into lowering their demands. They also want Revis to lower his long-term demands
How do I know this? A 49er official clearly told that to Mortenson.
“The 49ers believe Revis’ price tag, both in contract and draft-pick compensation, does not fit their model even though the team has a need at cornerback and a bounty of 12 draft picks that is expected to grow to 15 when the NFL awards compensatory picks later this month,” wrote Mortensen.
To me, that doesn’t sound like a team disinterested – this sounds like a team interested if a couple of things changing (Schwartz and the Jets lower their demands).
I’ve said this before, and I will say it again – Denver is a sleeper in all this. They like to do their business quietly. Remember, they came out of nowhere in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes last year.
Did you see the story today where they want Elvis Dumervil to take a pay-cut?
If he doesn’t, they might want to dump him and sign Dwight Freeney for much less.
Dumervil had 17 sacks in 2009 as a 3-4 OLB. The team moved back to the 4-3 under John Fox the last couple of seasons.
The man has a knack for getting to the quarterback.
At Jackson High School in Miami he had 78 sacks.
At Louisville, he set an NCAA single game sack total with six against Kentucky.
A Dumervil (and a draft pick) for Revis trade would have to be enticing to the Jets.
Dumervil just turned 29 in January, and Revis turns 28 over the summer.
You could make the argument that the Jets would be better off getting a bunch of draft picks in a Revis’ trade to help them re-tool.
But you know what, pass rushers are really, really hard to find. The highly-touted ones in the draft don’t work out well.
Dumervil as a pass rusher is a known commodity – he knows how to get to the quarterback. Can you imagine what Rex could do with him, moving him around?
Manish Mehta mentioned Atlanta and San Francisco as the two leading candidates to land Revis.
Think about what Atlanta, San Francisco and Denver have in common – they are all perhaps a #1 corner away from being a Super Bowl champ.
Cornerbacks like Revis don’t grow on trees.
For all those people saying the Jets are in a position of weakness – they are probably wrong – a team will bite here – if the Jets want to trade Revis (around the draft when he’s closer to 100 percent), they will be able to do it, and get nice value in return.
