Seattle – Rex is acting a little strange on his QB situation.
He keeps saying Mark Sanchez gives them the best chance to win.
Why does he keep saying that?
If I were to pretend to be Dr. Phil for a minute, I think he’s saying something without saying it.
And I think Steve Mariucci put it best this morning on the NFL Network.
“I am starting to think Woody Johnson made the call to bring Tim Tebow to the Jets. Rex Ryan is less willing to use him, as is Tony Sparano,” Mariucci said.
Why else would Rex keep repeating this bizarre response, especially after a game like today, when Sanchez was a liability?
It’s almost like he’s saying, “I don’t care what Gary Myers, Rich Cimini or anybody on the outside says, I’m not starting Tim Tebow.”
But you know what, when I asked Rex repeated queries after the game, in the catacombs of Century Link Stadium, about why he is sticking with Sanchez, I wasn’t just thinking Tebow.
It could be Tebow or Greg McElroy (who is very underrated), I just think the Jets need to make a change – maybe even for a few games.
The Jets’ offense sucked the life out of their defense today.
The Jets defense was outstanding for three quarters. Rex Ryan and Mike Pettine drew up a heck of a game plan to deal with Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch.
But in the fourth quarter, after being on the field too long, the defense kind of fell apart.
However, I’m not going to sit here and rip them for that.
When you get NOTHING from the offense – nothing – after a while, having to carry the team can lead to the house of cards tumbling down.
I thought Mo Wilkerson was tremendous in Seattle. This is the best Sione Pouha looked all year – he was close to his old run-stopping self in this game with six stops.
The Jets should have won this game. When you get that kind of defensive effort, all they needed was a little more from the offense.
That is why I mentioned last week, this would have been a good game to start Tebow. The final score was misleading. It was 14-7 after three quarters.
This was a Tebow kind of game – the defense keeps the team in the game (like they often did in Denver last year), and Tebow works his magic in the fourth quarter, doing just enough for the team to win.
You know what Rex, if “Mooch” is right and you didn’t want Tebow, why didn’t you put your foot down with Woody and Ira, and say, “over my dead body.”
You think they are going to fire you? Unlikely.
Stop the passive aggressive approach.
But whatever Rex’s position was on the Tebow trade, the Jets have to make a QB change now, or Rex could lose the team.
Being around this team for a long time, I expect the unnamed player quotes to start popping up this week, ripping the quarterback, with Manish Mehta and Rich Cimini, the most likely writers to get them.
“Hope” in the NFL starts at the quarterback position, so it’s time for a “change.”
Maybe just for a few weeks, and if doesn’t work, go back to Sanchez.
But players aren’t stupid Rex.
Repeating the mantra – “Mark gives us the best chance to win,” is going to start hurting your credibility in the locker room.
