East Rutherford – Some thoughts from the Jets impressive win over Buffalo on Thursday Night Football . . .
Richie Incognito sounded off about Thursday night games in the locker room after the game.
The Bills left guard looked terrible tonight. The Jets dominated him (and left tackle Cordy Glenn). Thursday night games are tough, especially for older players, especially for the big guys. Incognito clearly had dead legs tonight. The older you are, the longer it takes you to recover from the previous Sunday. A guy like needs the full seven days.
I’m not making excuses for Richie, just dealing with the reality of these Thursday games, which could go away in the near future . . .
Josh McCown’s third-quarter touchdown pass to Robby Anderson was on an audible. He saw single-coverage across the board, and audibled to a pass to Anderson, who was one-on-one far right on CB Tre White. McCown says that cornerbacks are having a really hard time dealing with Anderson on the line – he’s getting a lot of quick releases. He’s not beating cornerbacks with power, he’s beating them with very quick feet off the line. So he got by White quickly, and McCown threw a perfect pass for a 25-yard TD . . .
While they are clearly a better team than last year, there is one aspect of the 2017 Jets that reminds me of 2016 – they tend to fair much better against teams with average to below-average quarterbacks.
Because like last year, they are having issues at cornerback, and the really good quarterbacks can exploit this more than the middling quarterbacks.
I think Tyrod Taylor is an average quarterback, but even he lit them up late, like Miami and Atlanta did. Late in tonight’s game, and late against Miami and Atlanta, the Jets corners gave up way too many plays and committed way too many penalties. This is a problem.
It’s kind of funny that the Jets acquired Rashard Robinson (pictured above) in a trade this week. He was the most penalized cornerback in football with San Francisco, so they traded him. And he was on the sidelines tonight as a member of the Jets (he didn’t play), watching all these penalties – imagine what he was thinking? “I got traded for this.”
I don’t think Jameis Winston is a great QB yet, so I think they can win next week, but when they face quarterbacks who see the whole field, like Tom Brady and Matt Ryan, they tend to struggle.
Jets need to prove they can beat teams with top-shelf quarterbacks.
And in order to do that, they need better cornerback play.
Getting Mo Claiborne back should help. He’s clearly their best cornerback . . .
In the second quarter of this game, Taylor hit Zay Jones for a touchdown in the middle of the end zone. It was the same thing we saw in Oakland, and all summer in training camp – Juston Burris has stiff hips, and limited short-area quickness, and quick receivers cut away from him. It happens all the time. It’s not his fault. It’s the way he’s built . . .
Leonard Williams said one of the keys to dealing with Tyrod Taylor is stuffing the B-Gap that likes to step up in to. The Jets made sure that was filled all night, and Taylor struggled with his step-ups into the pocket all night . . .
