Premium – Time for another edition of “One Jets Drive,” and we look at spin, Tone Time’s future, a Jets power broker and more . . .
Rex Ryan reminded us today, “[Geno] also led us in (late) drives to four victories.”
Please retire that quote Rex.
It’s getting old.
And it’s a little misleading.
In the Tampa Bay game, the Jets last drive was aided by a 15-yard penalty by linebacker Lavonte David on a hit out of bounds. But that is left out of the narrative.
I have nothing against Geno.
He’s seems like a nice young man.
Buy the kid struggles reading defenses, with pocket presence, accuracy, blitzes, along with a significant telegraphing problem.
He is a major protect.
Hopefully for his sake, he will figure all of this out. But he’s got a lot of work to do.
But Rex, please stop the window-dressing.
The Jets’ offense is a train wreck right now, forcing a rookie quarterback to play way before he was ready – he’s thrown 21 interceptions and five pick sixes.
Stop the darn spin . . .
Santonio Holmes says he would take a pay cut to stay with the Jets.
If I were running the Jets, this would be out of the question. It’s time to move on.
But Rex is so into “Tone Time,” if the coach returns, I wouldn’t be shocked if Holmes comes back.
Remember, the coach has taken a “see no evil, hear no evil” approach with this guy.
Remember, in Miami, when Holmes was thrown out the huddle, and Rex claimed not to see any of what happened.
The Pittsburgh Steelers wanted this guy out of their building at all costs. Even though he helped them win a Super Bowl, they tired of his moodiness.
But the Jets might keep this thing rolling.
They stay with players that other team wouldn’t – whether it’s a first round corner from a few years ago, or a rookie starter at guard who is really, really struggling but stays in the lineup, Mike Goodson after his arrest and so forth.
There is a different world-view over there.
I’m not being flip – just keeping it real.
If you are one of their anointed players, the leash is as long as the Great Wall of China . . .
People always ask me if Rex is going to survive.
I really don’t know.
Like I said the other day, John Idzik is extremely close to the vest.
I hear from people around the scene that it’s really hard to figure out what he’s thinking.
One guy who can help him survive, who isn’t being mentioned, is Ira Akselrad.
His power in the Jets’ organization is enormous – ENORMOUS.
He is Woody Johnson’s right hand man. He has Woody’s ear more than anybody else.
And he’s Woody’s money man. He runs “The Johnson Company,” which manages Woody’s money.
His influence is significant.
From what we hear, his constant involvement in Florham Park led to the departure of Matt Higgins, who is now running the Miami Dolphins (business side).
And since Axselrad is heavily involved with managing the owner’s money, don’t you think he’s going to advise Woody to keep Rex, and not eat the $3 million he is owned next year?
Remember, the owner already had to eat money from Mike Tannenbaum, Brian Shottenheimer and Tony Sparano contracts.
Do you think he’s going to advise Johnson to eat yet another big money contract?
So keep the influence of Axselrad in mind when it comes to Rex’s future.
He’s a very powerful man at One Jets Drive.
