Florham Park – It’s getting tedious. Knock it off . . .
In today’s Todd Bowles press conference, it was one question after the other about replacing Josh McCown with one of the Jets’ young quarterbacks.
And it wasn’t the first press conference this happened recently?
What is driving this?
I think it’s abject stupidity.
McCown is playing well. Not perfect, but playing well.
Did you know McCown leads the NFL in third down accuracy?
Here is the deal:
First of all, if Bowles went to one of the young quarterbacks, he’s lose the locker room. Robby Anderson might lose it.
Secondly, who are you replacing him with?
Do you really need to see Bryce Petty? He got his stage to show what he can do late last season. I think what we saw was a guy who could be a #2 quarterback, and there is nothing wrong with that. I think a lot of us felt the same way about Kellen Clemens, and he’s still making a nice living doing that with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Is this the time to see Christian Hackenberg who had nine three-and-outs in the fourth preseason game against backup defenders and no defensive game-planning?
I know I keep repeating that same narrative about Hackenberg, but to me, it’s powerful. I don’t think the Jets need to see him now.
Hackenberg needs to get into the off-season and continue to improve under the tutelage of Jeremy Bates.
And then he needs to play a lot better in the preseason, and if he doesn’t, the Jets should release him on the final cutdown next summer.
Also, the Jets should pick a quarterback high in next year’s draft, and throw him into the hopper.
I’ve said this many times, quarterback hunting needs to be like fishing, you need to keep throwing your line into the water into you reel in the big catch.
There are a ton of intriguing QB prospects who will go in the first and second round of the upcoming draft.
And that pick, along with Hackenberg should backup and learn from . . . drum roll please . . . Josh McCown in 2018.
McCown, if he is healthy should be the Jets QB next year. He’s still got his legs (a lot of times the legs go on older quarterbacks) and his arm (that 33-yard TD pass to Robby Anderson against Carolina was one of the better passes by a Jets QB I’ve seen in a while).
And today McCown showed some ankle on whether he wants to play next year.
“When you feel like you have been chasing this level that you believe you can play at for a long and you start to feel like you are scratching the surface in doing some of those things and settling into a system that you like, it’s hard to end it and be done,” McCown said today.
He added, “I love being in the system and it would be fun to play in the system for two years in a row. I would love to see where I can take that, so we’ll see.”
Forget the stupid age clichés. Everybody is different. Don’t assume because a guy is a certain age he can’t do it anymore.
McCown is playing at a high level.
If he’s healthy, he should be the Jets’ QB next year.
And I wish these reporters would knock it off with the “play the young guys” clap trap.
Because if there is a good chance McCown will be the QB next year, why wouldn’t you want him working with the core group down the stretch?
