Florham Park – It’s time for another edition of “Telling it like it is,” straight from Jets camp at One Jets Drive . . .
For a 6-8, 315 pound defensive end, Ropati Pitoitua does a nice job of making himself small, allowing him to slip through cracks in the line. In practice, he slipped by guard Chris Stewart, to get in Mark Brunell’s face, for a QB pressure.
The Jets are going to have a real nice defensive end rotation with Pitoitua, Mo Wilkerson and Mike DeVito. Perhaps Marcus Dixon will be in the rotation also, but I have to honest with you, I haven’t noticed him much this summer. Guard Robbie Felix pancaked Dixon in today’s practice . . .
Derrick Mason beat Ellis Lankster on a deep post. Mason had a terrific practice today. He’s an outstanding route runner . . .
Aside from Bruce Harper, I don’t think I’ve seen another former Jet at a training camp practice. For some reason, the Jets don’t have a very good alumni association . . .
Jeff Cumberland had a nice one-handed grab on a square-out thrown by Greg McElroy . . .
Mark Sanchez accuracy was wildly inconsistent in practice, including a crossing route he threw behind Scotty McKnight. He threw behind Shonn Greene on a short pass in the red zone. He also threw high to Dustin Keller down the deep middle and was picked-off by Dwight Lowery.
Offensive consultant Tom Moore can give the Jets all the pointers in the world, but I don’t know if he can make Mark Sanchez more accurate . . .
Rookie free agent wide receiver Mike Campbell continues to impress. The 6-2, 205-pound Temple product, from Edison, NJ, is a really nice athlete, and catches almost everything thrown his way . . .
FA linebacker Brandon Long is on his way to Canton.
Long was out with an injury today, and in this cut-throat league, he could be sent packing home to Canton, OH if he can’t get back out there soon . . .
Guard Curtis Duron pancaked Jarron Gilbert clearing the path for a nice run by Chris Jennings.
It just doesn’t look good for Gilbert. He looks the part (6-5, 285), but just doesn’t make a lot of plays. His instincts aren’t great . . .
Garrett McIntyre continues to make plays.
The outside linebacker, from Fresno State and the CFL, blew by a pretty good blocker, backup tight end Matt Mulligan, for a sack. Mulligan clapped his hands together in a sign of frustration.
It looks like McIntyre is going to hang around for a while . . .
Rex Ryan was asked about a report that the Jets are $9 million under the cap.
“Well, people a lot smarter than me figure all that stuff out,” Ryan said.
Ryan goes into his country bumpkin routine when he doesn’t want to answer a question.
He goes into this routine a lot when it comes to injuries.
If this report is true, the Jets truly did treat Shaun Ellis shabbily . . .
