What is the real reason for all this?
With Jamal Adams, the narrative on why he wants to be traded, has been subject to change.
At first, the narrative was because he wanted a new contract, and the Jets were dragging their feet.
The reason the Jets are dragging their feet was explained by Yahoo’s Charles Robinson, who has a great source with the Jets:
“Sticking point on extension is simple. Guys like Aaron Donald and Khalil Mack played four seasons (and won DPOY) before their extensions. Jets don’t want to do Adams’ deal after three years for the highest-paid-safety money he wants. In 2021 it could be a different story.”
Sometimes the better information on these things goes to national guys, not beat-writers, because many people in the building aren’t enamored of beat-writers, because they are often negative about the team.
Okay, so first we believed it was just about the contract.
But then it was leaked out to a couple of reporters, ostensibly by the agent, that if Adams was traded to certain teams, he wouldn’t necessarily demand a new deal this year. His hometown Dallas Cowboys are a perfect example of a team he would likely be willing to wait a year to get a new deal. Remember, he told a fan in a Dallas shopping center that he was “trying” to force a trade to the Cowboys. It’s unclear whether that exchange was staged or not.
So if he’s willing to go somewhere else, but not ask for a new deal this year, then it’s clearly not just about money.
Then, somebody, presumably from the Adams’ camp, leaked to Manish Mehta that Adam Gase is the reason that the safety wants a trade.
Mehta tweeted: “Sources: Adam Gase is a major factor why All-Pro Jamal Adams has felt uncomfortable with his long-term future with the Jets and requested a trade.”
Okay, so is it Gase, the desire for a new contract, or just wanting to go somewhere else like Dallas?
Well, before you vote on that, consider there is now another reason for this whole mess, according to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington. It’s related to the serious hip injury Jamal’s father George suffered early in his career as a running back with the New York Giants.
“His father, George Adams, who he is very close to, was drafted by the New York Giants in 1985 as a first-round pick,” Darlington said. “The next year in training camp, after having a pretty solid rookie season, he suffered a severe hip injury that ultimately ended his career. George Adams has since had two hip replacement surgeries. He never got paid, essentially, the big dollars for his NFL career. Adams looks at that situation and says ‘I need to get paid as soon as I can because you never know when this game is taken away from you.’”
Okay, so now there are four reasons for his mess.
So there is a Wheel of Fortune of narratives coming from the Adams’ camp on the reason(s) he wants out.
In other words, their narratives have been all over the map.
Is it the money, is it not wanting to play in New Jersey so the money doesn’t matter right now, is it Gase, is it his father’s injury?
