Premium – A heaping helping of Dan’s Website Whispers on the 5-6 New York Football Jets.
Ryan Quigley was injured in the fourth quarter when he was hit on a punt return by Baltimore linebacker Courtney Upshaw.
He was actually limping off the field after the play.
I asked him after the game if he had some kind of leg injury since he was limping, and he said he didn’t suffer a leg injury.
He actually suffered “whiplash” from the hit.
And he was hit so hard, he doesn’t even remember limping.
He might have suffered a slight concussion.
He seemed fine after the game, and should be good to go against Miami.
Quigley had a pretty good game in Baltimore in very tough conditions with three punts being downed inside the 20 . . .
A heads-up for Tuesday. Expect a lot of Mark Sanchez stories.
He’s making a charity appearance, and has agreed to speak to the press.
This will be the first time he addresses the media since season-ending shoulder surgery in early October.
Sanchez likely would have been the Jets quarterback, at least early in the season, after clearly beating out Geno Smith for the job this summer.
But he blew out his shoulder when the Rex Ryan, perhaps under orders from John Idzik, put him in during the fourth quarter of the Jets’ third preseason game against the New York Giants.
After the game, he was heard screaming at Jets GM John Idzik in the Jets’ training room for the plan to play him in the late in the game with backups, leading to an injury.
So tomorrow there will be a lot of Sanchez stuff on TV and in the papers.
Sanchezz is under contract next year, and considering the struggles of Geno Smith (8 touchdowns to 18 interception), he might actually be back in the picture.
But then again, he might want to get out of here.
First of all, Idzik loves Smith. That is his guy.
And secondly, Idzik has proven this season he’s not the big on competition, so Sanchez probably wouldn’t be given much a chance to compete for the job.
It should be interesting to hear what Sanchez has to say tomorrow . . .
Sheldon Richardson was unreal in Baltimore.
In a game with a lot of good defensive players on the field, on both team, he was the best defender on the field.
Richardson finished with nine tackles, a shared sack, three tackles for loss and one quarterback hit. Nine tackles is outstanding for a 3-4 end.
He is a 6-3. 294-pound player with the athletic ability of a linebacker. A perfect example of this was when he stopped Wildcat QB Tyrod Taylor of a loss of six early in the fourth quarter.
He’s in a battle for the rookie of the year with Buffalo linebacker Kiko Alonso.
Whether he wins or not, the Jets did a great job of getting great value for the draft pick they acquired for Darrelle Revis.
While Idzik’s other four rookie starters are struggling, and the other two who were handed roster spots whether they deserved them or not, Richardson is playing like a seasoned vet.
This was a heck of a draft pick.
