Let’s keep it real . . .
The Jets were talking before the Miami game about how they have a chance to dig out of their hole with most of their division games coming up.
Clearly that was something the coach or somebody told them in a meeting last week, because a lot of guys were pushing that narrative.
The thing that kept popping into my mind as I heard this mantra over and over was, “You guys think facing Tom Brady twice is a good thing?”
Can you imagine what is going to happen when they face Thomas Edward Brady twice?
You gotta be able to score to keep up with that cat.
I think Sam Darnold is a terrific prospect, but he’s struggling right now. Let’s be honest, a rookie QB against Tom Brady is like bringing a knife to a gun fight. He’s playing chess and your’re playing checkers.
Brady beat Aaron Rodgers by 14 on Sunday. Rodgers is a future Hall-of-Fame QB. What is Brady going to do against the Jets with a rookie QB, who got dominated by a Miami defense, that was awful the prior three games?
Also, another reason the second half of the season, no matter how many division games they have, isn’t a great opportunity to dig out of the hole, is they are using this season as a petri dish to grow Darnold.
Darnold said today, he’s “just playing stupid.” No he’s not. He’s doing the best he can. He really is. I’m not being a wise guy. Let me repeat – he’s doing the best he can.
Darnold said Sunday after his four interception performance in Miami, “There’s no excuse for how I played out there.”
He’s wrong. He has an airtight excuse. He was rushed into action and he’s not ready, just like Pat Mahomes wasn’t ready right out of the gate.
I blame NONE of this on Darnold. NONE of it.
If you want to blame people for his struggles, blame those who put him out there before he was ready.
To me, in life, you shouldn’t criticize somebody who was given a job he wasn’t ready for.
If you take a guitar student from Guitar Center, and put him in Bon Jovi’s band, and he struggles, whose fault is that?
How would it make any sense for me to criticize Darnold right now?
Jamal Adams is very frustrated with all the losing.
“It’s the same, same, same stuff,” Adams said after the Jets loss in Miami. “It’s frustrating. I’m not going to hold my tongue for anything anymore. I’m not a loser. I don’t do this for fantasy points. I do this for the love of the game. I’m passionate about this team and I believe in this team.
“I’m sick of losing. Honestly, I’m sick of losing. I’m fed up with losing. … It pisses me off every time. I’m not a loser. I want to get back on the winning track. We’ve lost three straight? Come on, man.”
While you respect his passion, how is this going to solve why the Jets are losing this year?
And he is holding his tongue because he clearly knows Josh McCown gives a better chance to win this year. Anyone around the Jets, knows Adams loves McCown. It’s not that he doesn’t like Sam.
The biggest reason they are losing is they decided to use this season to develop a 21-year-old QB who came out after his red-shirt sophomore year. A QB who had 13 picks and nine fumbles as a red-shirt sophomore.
You don’t think McCown would have scored more than two field goals against a Miami defense, that was so putrid the previous three games, that the South Florida media was wondering if the DC was going to be fired.
C’mon now.
The Jets brass decided to use this year to develop a QB.
It is what it is.
Let’s stop playing pretend.
