I’ve never seen anything like this.
It’s beyond the pale.
“Wilkerson is getting some terrible advice. The last place he should be near given his issues with alcohol is Bourbon Street/French Quarter. Who is advising this guy?” – Manish Mehta tweeted on Friday.
Before I continue, I want to poke a hole in the premise of the tweet.
If you want to drink, what difference does your work location make?
If somebody likes to drink, and I’m not accusing anybody of anything, what difference does it make where they live? Last time I checked, you can buy alcohol in all states, not just Louisiana.
Brett Favre was a party animal in Green Bay, Wisconsin (and Atlanta before that).
Foolish premise. If you want to drink, you can do it anywhere.
Once again, I’ve never seen Jets coverage like this in my life.
In fact, I don’t think there is anybody covering any team, in any sport, who is taking this approach.
Hey, it’s working, he gets a lot of clicks. His bosses love him. It’s all about the website clicks these days.
And as I’ve said before, I will say it again – the Jets have no answer for him.
He’s like Lawrence Taylor in his prime against most left tackles
I’m not talking about excellence. I’m talking about an opponent you have no answer for.
Why is he piling on Wilkerson when he’s out the door?
Probably because Wilkerson and his agent didn’t play ball with him.
Best way to avoid getting attacked is feeding the lions.
Does Wilkerson drink?
I think he does.
I drink sometimes.
Many of you probably do.
Does he have a problem?
I have no idea.
But why go there?
Are you trying to sabotage his next contract with another team?
The Jets have a big problem here.
I know Mo is no longer with the team, but this writer is impacting their football culture, there is no way around that fact.
He also corners players all the time, like Jamal Adams, and peppers them with questions, looking for that one money quote, and the team doesn’t do anything to extract the players from these uncomfortable scenarios.
They are on their own to fend for themselves.
Todd Bowles doesn’t seem to think that reporters destroying his players is something he needs to deal with.
But you know what, the great coaches, the Nick Saban’s, the Bill Belichick’s, the Dabo Swinney’s, everything involving their program is in their wheelhouse. EVERYTHING.
Maybe Coach Bowles doesn’t seem to care because the writer doesn’t criticize him.
And there is a reason for that.
Jets need some leadership on this front. You can’t expect a problem to go away by ignoring it.
If I were a free agent, I’m not sure I’d want to sign him. It’s out of control.
Players are unhappy with what is going on. This falls into the workplace environment category.
The Mo Wilkerson situation was a mess, and there is plenty of blame to go around.
Wilkerson lateness is inexcusable (but compared to what the three recent arrested Jets did, he’s The Pope).
So the player deserves so blame, as does the GM who gave him big money before his leg was 100 healed and he proved he could play like his old self.
But so does the coach for not having the player’s back with a reporter who destroyed the player over and over again, like when he compared him to “The Goodyear Blimp.”
Wilkerson reportedly told people in Green Bay he needed to get out of the Jets’ situation.
Considering what the Daily News did to him over and over, do you blame him?
