East Rutherford – A couple of very important points to make regarding the New York Jets now, and where they need to go . . .
Bill Belichick said it all in his post-game.
“I’m glad he’s our quarterback,” Belichick said about Tom Brady.
In a way this Brady-era is similar to when Michael Jordan played for the Chicago Bulls and they won six championships.
Valiant effort by the Jets today. Played their hearts out. But Brady beat them at the end.
They did get the ball back with a little under two minutes left, but Chris Long beat Ben Ijalana for a blindside sack and Ryan Fitzpatrick got crushed and fumbled and that was it.
Until Brady goes, or his skills start to slip, this is like the Jordan years in Chicago.
And what makes it even tougher for the Jets, Dolphins and Bills, is they are in the same division . . .
As I’m writing this, we just saw outside linebacker Justin Houston get his third sack of the half for the Kansas City Chiefs, one for a safety.
The Jets lack of a consistent edge pass rush is really, really hurting them.
I’m sorry to bore the people who have been reading me for a long time, but when was the last time they had a sack-daddy coming off the edge? John Abraham?
It’s been a long drought.
People are quick to rip Mo Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson and Leonard Williams, but honestly, in a 3-4 defense, the pass rushers that really stir the drink are coming off the edge. Those guys get pressure at times, but they are all 300-pounders and do their best work inside.
Look at what Von Miller does for Denver at 3-4 OLB. Elvis Dumervil and Terrell Suggs over the years.
These are all 3-4 outside linebackers who can wreck a game. Mr. Coffee has got to go out and get one in this draft. Whether it’s Myles Garrett of Texas A-and-M, Jonathan Allen of Alabama. They Jets have got to get a guy like this to make this defense work.
Lorenzo Mauldin is a good #2 outside linebacker in a 3-4. The Jets need a big-time game-changing 3-4 OLB. No more messing around. Make it happen.
Tom Brady had too much time to throw in the second half. The Jets edge rusher with dancing with the tackles.
It’s really hard to beat Brady with the pedestrian production the Jets are getting off the edge. The Broncos beat the Patriots in the playoffs last year not because of Peyton Manning, but because of Von Miller.
There was a stretch in this game where Mike Catapano was rushing over left tackle Nate Solder. Nothing doing there.
Andy Reid said it out loud when he released Catapano. He’s said he’s not a 3-4 OLB. Why do the Jet the Jets think he is? Great kid but not a 3-4 OLB.
If it takes picking three of them in the next draft, with the hope that one works out, so be it. Jets have got to get this fixed. No more kicking the can down the road . . .
Ryan Fitzpatrick played very well today (115.2 QB rating) against a Belichick defense. He by far give the Jets their best chance to win right now, and probably should be brought back next year as an insurance policy in case Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg aren’t ready.
Don’t worry about fan reaction.
And that brings me to the most important point involving the Jets right now – no more personnel moves, ever again, done for PR reasons.
Darrelle Revis gave up two touchdown passes today and the Jets lost 22-17. You do the math.
Revis was signed for PR and marketing reasons. You don’t win doing that. You think Belichick has ever done that?
This approach needs to be in the Jets’ rear-view mirror.
No more!
