Time for some more Website Whispers from One Jets Drive in Florham Park from Jets Confidential publisher Dan Leberfeld. Talk about it . . .
I know Isaiah Trufant is questionable, but I don’t think he’s going top play.
He’s still not 100 percent, and lacks his “top end” speed right now, meaning he can’t run full speed, can’t run his usual 4.3.
Mike Westhoff is very happy with the job Ellis Lankster has done filling for Trufant as one of the gunners . . .
I asked tight end Shawn Nelson what makes his former quarterback in Buffalo so tough to deal with.
Nelson pointed out how smart he is, and he’s so good at film study, he’s constantly pulling players over during the week, and giving them pointers from what he saw.
Nelson also says the QB is also a risk-taker.
“He will take chances, and he’s good at it,” Nelson said . . .
The Jets get a break this week, their nemesis, DT Kyle Williams, will not play with a foot injury. They have had a lot of trouble with the LSU-product in the past. In fact, they might not see him in the second meeting either. IR is being considered for Williams . . .
As I mentioned on Thursday, a big challenge for the Jets defense will be covering 6-7 tight end Jeff Chandler.
A couple of tidbits I got from defenders who might have to deal with him.
One used an interesting expression I hadn’t heard before. He said you need to “play slow.”
What he means by that, is you need to trail him and stay in front of him – don’t run down field past him. If he gets in front of you, he can box you out like a power forward, and it’s very hard to get around him. If you stay in front of him, you have a better chance of playing the ball.
Also, since it’s hard for a defender to high point the ball with him, you have to grab one of his arms as he’s about to catch the ball, and hope you don’t get called for interference . . .
While Rex Ryan, Mark Sanchez and Brian Schottenheimer continue to say they won’t force passes to players upset about their involvement, expect a major role for Santonio Holmes this week in Buffalo.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk (perhaps via Joel Segal), Holmes is unhappy with his role. He has 24 catches in seven games. Florio ran this note a week ago, during the bye week.
The point I’m making his simple – while the Jets aren’t going to force a bunch of passes to Holmes, the buzz that he’s unhappy, will subtly impact the mindset of all involved. We are dealing with humans here.
Don’t be shocked if the first pass of the game goes to Holmes . . .
A funny scene in practice on Friday – during a defensive back drill, a pass from Dennis Thurman to DB, almost hit a reporter.
“We weren’t throwing at the media,” Antonio Cromartie joked.
Remember last year Thurman was accused of throwing passes near an attractive female reporters to defenders could get a closer look.
Tomorrow is a travel day, so premium content will return on Monday afternoon. Enjoy the weekend and the game on Sunday.
