There was a throw . . .
. . . at the end of Thursday’s practice that was vintage Sam Darnold.
He was under pressure, stepped up in the pocket, and threw a rocket to Jamison Crowder crossing the back of the end zone.
When the play breaks down, and it turns into street ball, he’s tremendous at that. He amazing when a play goes off schedule . . .
With the Brandon Copeland suspension, expect a heavy dose of #44, Harvey Langi.
He was getting a lot of prime-time reps today.
This guy looks like a terrific find for the Jets.
He can play inside and outside linebacker, is very athletic, very smart and extremely tough. Keep in mind this guy played running back at the beginning of his college career. He’s very light on his feet. This is a player who Bill Belichick really liked. When Langi went undrafted out of BYU, the Patriots gave him $100,000 guaranteed to sign with them. Belichick is a big fan of landing some of the top undrafted free agents, and is willing to outbid teams on the bonuses. He really wanted Langi, and the linebacker ended up making the Patriots in 2017, and played some as a rookie, and then was in serious car accident. He never really got back on track in New England after the accident.
The Jets love this guy, and expect him to be a big part of Gregg Williams’ defense. He’s 6-2, 250 pounds with top-shelf athleticism . . .
Aside from being a good slot corner, Brian Poole is also a very good blitzer, and in today’s practice, he blitzed and tipped a Trevor Siemian pass that fell incomplete.
Poole is a very, very instinctive football player . . .
I still wonder a little about this right guard situation. Alex Lewis has been filling for Brian Winters (shoulder) the last couple of weeks. Today, Lewis showed great mobility getting way down field to lead the way on a successful screen to Le’Veon Bell. He’s very mobile for 6-6, 305. He came into college at Colorado as a tight end and he’s maintained some of that mobility. He transferred to Nebraska where he played guard.
I’m not looking to be controversial here, but I just wonder if this isn’t more of a tough decision than most people believe . . .
Darnold hit Ty Montgomery for a touchdown on a bootleg to the right side.
Montgomery has been prolific in the Jets’ passing offense this summer, and I would not be surprised if Le’Veon Bell and Montgomery both have over 50 catches each this season . . .
The Jets waiver claim of safety Derrick Kindred makes a lot of sense. First off, they needed a safety with the release of Santos Ramirez.
He comes in knowing Gregg Williams system. He played for him the last two years in Cleveland. That is so important when you bring somebody in this late in camp – a guy who knows the system.
Another reason he’s a good fit for Williams is that he’s a big-time hitter . . .
Initially, you got the sense that Brent Qvale’s knee injury, suffered early in camp, was something he could eventually come back from this year.
But I saw him today with a big brace on his leg and on crutches. The injury was close to a month ago. He doesn’t look like he will be able return any time soon.
