Time for a heaping helping of Dan’s Website Whispers, with a variety of different Jets notes. Let’s get it started . . .
Somebody must have hacked D’Brickashaw Ferguson’s twitter account. LOL.
“Congrats to Mario (Williams), now he has to face us twice a year. I like our odds.”
Wow!
Ferguson is consistently unquotable – on purpose – he doesn’t want to ever cause any problems. He never slips up. The erudite UVA graduate is careful with every word that leaves his mouth, to the point where is quotes are generally tough to use.
But this tweet was out of character, and it’s probably something the coaches are happy to see – some fire. Let’s be honest, while there is so much focus on Wayne Hunter’s struggles in 2011, Ferguson didn’t have his best season last year.
It sounds like he’s ready to get back at it, and redeem himself.
Last time the Jets played against Houston in the regular season, in 2010, Damien Woody got hurt, and Mario Williams was dominant, getting the best of Wayne Hunter, who was thrust into action . . .
If the Jets are truly interested in bringing back Jericho Cotchery, they will come competition from Pittsburgh and Kansas City.
Now that Hines Ward is out of the picture in Pittsburgh, the Steelers definitely want J-Co back to provide sage leadership to their receiving corps. Also, they like him as a player.
Why is Kansas City interested? At first, we couldn’t figure that out.
Then it hit us – they just hired Brian Daboll as their offensive coordinator, and he was on Eric Mangini’s Jet staff, so he knows J-Co well. And if you get to work with J-Co, you want him on your team. He’s a tremendous person, worker and obviously a very good receiver. His attitude and approach rub off on those around him . . .
The Washington Redskins might have done the Jets a favor by outbidding them for safety Brandon Meriweather.
The Redskins gave him a two-year deal for $6 million.
While he was highly-regarded coming out of Miami, he hasn’t been a very good player in the NFL, with stops in Miami and Chicago that just didn’t work out.
What happened in New England where he was a first round pick who didn’t last very long?
“He took bad angles,” said one long-time Patriots observer. “I think he was trying too hard. He was benched by the team at different points. He would try to unload on a guy rather than make the smart play. When he returned to the lineup, he admitted he needed to listen to the coaches a little better and try to do what they were telling him, not freelance.”
And then he went to Chicago, where he got benched again.
“He can be a bit reckless, opting for big hits rather than wrapping up for the tackle. He seems to be having a tough time adjusting to a new defensive system.
“I remember talking to him one time about learning behind Rodney Harrison. He kept focusing on Harrison’s hits. But Harrison’s greatest strength was his instincts so he could BE in a position to make the hit, or the interception. I don’t think Meriweather ever got that.”
The Jets host free agent safety Reggie Nelson on Friday – he has tremendous speed, but as I’ve mentioned before, his instincts are so-so.
