New Jersey – It’s time for a heaping helping of Dan’s Website Whispers with a few different items heading into the weekend. Let’s get it started . . .
The Giants released DE Chris Canty this week.
Canty is right out of Central Casting to play 3-4 defensive end at 6-7, 317 pounds.
I thought he was a little miscast in the Giants’ 3-4 defense.
He’s going to be a nice addition to some 3-4 team. He’s only 30 and has some good football left.
While the Jets are set at the starting 3-4 end spots with Mo Wilkerson and Quinton Coples, if they fail to re-sign Mike DeVito, Canty would make a perfect third end to rotate with Wilkerson and Coples . . .
The New England are very smart when it comes to contracts, and the way they are handling CB Aqib Talib is a perfect example.
They acquired the cornerback from Tampa Bay around the trading deadline this past season.
He did a nice job for them, and when he got hurt in the AFC Championship Game against Baltimore, it was a devastating blow to the Patriots’ defense. He got hurt early in the game, and you could see New England’s pass defense take a step back after the injury.
But even though New England values his talent, they reportedly only want to give him a one-year deal.
He’s had a few off-the-field issues, and the Pats and some other teams feel, that with problematic players, it’s best to keep them on one-year deals. It’s smart to keep dangling the contact carrot in front of them – it generally leads to better behavior.
When you are playing for your next contract, even the mercurial guys tend to behave better.
Why am I bringing the contract situation up on jetsconfidential.com?
Because this is how the Jets probably should have handled Santonio Holmes?
When did he behave the best?
After the Jets traded for him and he was in the last year of his rookie contract.
Once you reward certain players with mega-deals, you sometimes lose control of them; they act like they are beyond reproach.
There is no question Mike Tannenbaum overpaid Holmes since the Jets were bidding against themselves, and the length of the deal basically put him in the driver’s seat with the team? If he cops an attitude, what are they going to do to him, with a contract that features $24.5 million in guaranteed money?
So the Pats are right for trying to get Talib to sign a one-year deal.
But honestly, it might not work.
There are so many teams hungry for #1 corners, somebody is going to likely give him a multi-year deal for good money, and there is a good chance, they will have buyer’s remorse down the road . . .
Don’t expect a lot of profligate spending by teams this off-season.
You might see a few big deals here and there, but I’m hearing there is belt tightening going on.
Expect a lot of free agents to end up signing one-year minimum deals across the league.
The economy is bad and a lot of teams are struggling at the box office, so don’t expect money to be thrown around like drunken sailors in 2013.
