Florham Park – Some Whispers from Florham Park today.
The Jets’ starting cornerbacks are Trumaine Johnson and Morris Claiborne, and this could emerge as one of their better combos in a few years. They are both having good camps.
But after that, that Jets should throw a blanket over everyone else and keep the best corners.
Cornerback Terrell Sinkfield, who spent last year on the Jets’ practice squad, had a terrific practice today.
He had a nice PD on a Sam Darnold slant to a receiver (I forget to write down the receiver’s number – sorry).
Later in practice he had a pick on a deep pass down the left side intended for tight Clive Warford that was overthrown.
Sinkfield is a very interesting prospect. He’s a former Northern Iowa and CFL wide receiver who made the transition to cornerback last year.
He has world-class speed having once run under 4.3 in the forty-yard dash.
He continues to move up the growth curve at cornerback . . .
Another developmental cornerback, who is under the radar, who I like, is Portland State’s Xavier Coleman,, who was with the Jets last year – practice squad, regular roster and IR. While he’s not as fast as Sinkfield (Coleman ran 4.5 at this Pro Day), he is very instinctive with a great feel for the game. He also has as 40-inch vertical. While he doesn’t get a ton of reps as a third-stringer, he makes the most of his reps. He has caught my eye . . .
Sam Darnold looked very good in a red zone drill today with touchdown tosses to WR Charles Johnson, TE Neal Sterling and TE Clive Warford.
Some young quarterbacks are scared to death to pull the trigger in the red zone where everything is compact and condensed and there isn’t a lot of space. They don’t want to throw a pick down there, so they are very, very conservative.
Darnold is very confident and not afraid to pull the trigger in the red zone . . .
There were some stories in the spring that Darron Lee was going to call the defensive signals, but during a press conference today, Avery Williamson talked about calling the signals.
Williamson wasn’t asked about who was calling the signals. He just mentioned in when answering a question about what he wanted to accomplish in the first preseason games. He talked about doing a good job calling the signals.
Nothing against Lee, but Williamson should call the signals. He did a good job doing this in Tennessee, and the Jets are looking for an upgrade over last year. Williamson is the guy who can do that. Lee just needs to focus on improving at his job, and this is a huge year for him – he needs to take a big step, especially in coverage, so he shouldn’t have to worry about calling the defensive signals . . .
At the end of the Jets’ stretching period today, cornerback Trumaine Johnson gave some kind of speech firing up the troops. He’s not just a very good corner, but a terrific leader.
