He has got to be seething inside.
Josh McCown always says and does the right thing. He’s your quintessential high-road guy.
I’m blessed to have the opportunity to cover this team from the inside during the week and on game day.
I feel very fortunate to have this access as a credentialed reporter. I never take this for granted.
So I’m in the Jets locker room a lot, during the week, and on game day.
And aside from taking notes on plays in games and practice, I like to observe people.
After the Jets’ loss in Miami, I saw McCown walking around the locker room and at his locker.
He seemed pretty upset to me.
And I have seen the same look on his face in the locker room in Florham Park during the week.
He doesn’t look like a happy guy to me right now.
Obviously the Jets loss bothered him, but I think it’s more than that.
I believe it’s a double-whammy for him. Not only does this loss, and all the others, sting him, but in his heart of hearts, he wishes he could do more about it.
And I’m not talking about being a better mentor.
I truly believe the Jets’ record could easily be reversed if McCown was the starter. Cleveland, both Miami games, and the Chicago contests could have easily gone the other way if the Jets got more from the QB position in a QB-driven league.
McCown’s family lives in Charlotte. His wife and two teenage sons live down there. He’s a great father. But he had a pretty good year last year before he got hurt, and McCown and his family felt why not try to continue a good thing.
So he signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Jets to come back.
Do you give a guy $10 million to be a backup?
I understand they didn’t know they were getting Darnold when they signed McCown, but why did the Jets need to rush Darnold into the starting lineup, for early season ticket sales and jersey sales? What was the damn rush.
He’s 21 and have him locked up for six years if they want – four-year rookie contract, fifth-year option and they they can tag him in the sixth year.
I said this over-and-over in the off-season in the magazine and on the website – let McCown start until they fall from wildcard contention and then let the kid start. Or if they are playing well this year with McCown, let Darnold sit the entire year and learn (like Patrick Mahomes last year), and perhaps take over in 2019.
I think the Jets made a colossal mistake not starting McCown.
And I think he knows that, but is too classy to say anything.
And who also knows that – Jamal Adams, who LOVES McCown.
Did you see how pissed Adams was after the game?
He knows who should be starting.
I’m not saying he told me this, but reading the tea leaves, and I guarantee you that is how he feels.
Jets should have won today in Miami. Their defense played well and the other team’s QB isn’t very good.
What a waste.
I still don’t get why Todd Bowles, who might be coaching for his job, would start a rookie QB who wasn’t ready to start?
How does that make sense coming off back-to-back 5-11 seasons?
If you might need a winning to save your job, is that what you would do?
