You always see these sort of stories now . . .
And they’ve never done anything for me.
I’m talking about stories on former Jets in the Super Bowl with a different team.
This isn’t just Jets related. You see it all over the country in markets where the team isn’t in the Super Bowl.
It’s never floated my boat.
It has nothing to do with the game, and it’s tedious for the players who are trying to focus on Sunday, not some team from their past.
There were a few articles about cornerback Morris Claiborne in area papers, asking him about his Jets days.
Honestly, I really don’t know how that matters this week.
Look, if a long-time Jet, let’s say Wayne Chrebet, left and went to the Super Bowl with another team, I can understand a story about him.
But Claiborne, and running back Raheem Mostert, who I will get to in a minute, why are these Jets related stories this week? Guys come and go from team in the NFL all the time. The NFL is a very transient league, especially with such large rosters (53-man regular roster and a 10-man practice squad). Guys are bouncing around all the time.
Claiborne, who is a terrific guy, was with the Jets for two seasons, and was okay, but a little inconsistent. They moved on, and he moved on. He’s on the Chiefs now. It is what it is. Do you guys and gals sit around thinking about his Jets career?
Just like Mike Pennel is on the Chiefs now, after a short stint with New England, who probably saw the same thing the Jets did – a hot and cold motor. The Chiefs had some injuries on their defensive line and had to add a guy during the season.
Is it really important to make this stuff into Jets’ stories this week?
And the fact that Mostert turned into a story was bizarre.
Headline – “Raheem Mostert’s six-day audition with the Jets. Frustrating and forgettable.”
Mostert, who had a great game for the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game, was on the Jets’ practice squad from September 6-12 in 2016.
A story was done on this the other day. How the Jets let him get away.
C’mon man, this stuff happens all the time.
I’m not saying the Jets had the best personnel department at the time, but teams are constantly churning the end of their roster and practice squad.
Hey, Bill Belichick made mistakes with two players the Jets landed early this season after being dumped by New England – receivers Demaryius Thomas and Braxton Berrios. Belichick could have used both of them this year with their dire receiving situation.
Look, I just don’t think this stuff is worth writing about on Super Bowl Week. Maybe a one or two line note, but that is about it. Hey, Mostert is worth mentioning in a note since he had a historic outing against Green Bay in the NFC Championship Game, but a whole story on how the Jets let him go?
There were stories on Darron Lee. I almost get this one a little more because he was a Jets first round pick, but he will probably be inactive for the Super Bowl. Once again, a short note would suffice.
In general, I have decided to stay away from these stories.
They have almost become cliché, and the players being interviewed really don’t want to focus on past teams this week.
You should have seen the pained look on the face of Sammy Watkins when surrounded by Buffalo reporters recalling his time there. He looked like he was getting root canal.
