Florham Park – Some of the good stuff from Gang Green’s Training Camp . . .
Jets rookie running back Elijah McGuire looks like he’s going to be very good for the Jets on screens.
Not only does he have very good hands, but good run-after-the-catch ability. Today, he caught a screen from Josh McCown on the right side, and showed a great burst, taking off, heading up field after the catch . . .
Jets rookie safety Jalen Adams looks like he’s going to be special. He has great instincts and a terrific feel for the game.
On one play in today’s Jets practice, he had a nice hit on fullback Julian Howsare to stop him short of the goalline, keeping him out of the end zone. He’s an explosive hitter.
He also stopped McGuire for a loss on a running play.
He also had a real nice blitz to harass McCown as he was throwing. As a blitzer, he gets there in a hurry.
Adams is going to help the Jets in many ways this year . . .
Dexter McDougle continues to make plays. He an impressive pick on a deep out from McCown to Charone Peake.
He’s making a strong push to make the team. In the Jets-Titans preseason game, he led the Jets with three defensed passes . . .
Early in camp, the Jets signed defensive tackle Jeremy Faulk, a college nomad, who had several stops and some controversy in college (he was accused of assault, but never convicted), so he had issues establishing himself on the college level.
But watching him today, it looks like the Jets might have something here. The 6-2. 300-pounder is an absolute powerhouse.
On two occasions today, he pushed back center Jonotthan Harrison (who is a good player) like he was on skates.
While he’s probably more of a practice squad candidate, this player’s power is awfully impressive . . .
Jets tight end Eric Tomlinson has looked superb as a blocker this summer.
But as I’ve mentioned before, he’s a much better receiver than advertised.
Today, he had a nice extension grab on a crossing route on a pass from Christian Hackenberg.
So often when a guy gets that stigma as a “blocking tight end” people minimize their receiving skills. This guy isn’t just a blocker. He consistently has shown very good hands in camp . . .
As many of you have heard by now, returner Lucky Whitehead broke his foot yesterday. He’s going to be out a while.
While this is a tough break for Whitehead, I don’t think it hurts the Jets that much.
First off, Frankie Hammond looked better than Whitehead as a returner against the Titans in the Jets’ first preseason game.
Watching Whitehead up close the last few weeks and in the game, I’ve come away with the impression that he has rare speed and quickness in the open field, but I don’t think he’s a great returner. It’s one thing to have the kind of speed and “quicks” that Whitehead has, but it’s another to use it effectively. I’m not sure Whitehead has a great plan with the ball in his hands. And honestly, if you look at his production in Dallas, it was kind of average.
I’m not saying Whitehead couldn’t have helped the Jets, but I think Hammond or Jordan Todman can certainly do the job.
