Florham Park, New Jersey – It’s time for a heaping helping Jets Training Camp Whispers.
Some think that Bryce Petty really isn’t in the Jets’ QB competition anymore.
Todd Bowles was asked about this, and shot down the theorem. He said Petty is still in it.
Petty had two really nice throws at the end of practice in a red zone drills.
First, he hit wide receiver Chris Harper on a 15-yard touchdown on the left side of the end zone, and then hit Myles White with a back shoulder throw on the right side for a touchdown.
I actually would consider putting Petty on the practice squad to save a roster spot. He hasn’t shown that he’s a transcendent talent, so if he gets signed, he gets signed – you just deal with it. If they lose him, I don’t think it would devastate them. But continuing to develop him on the practice squad would make sense. He’s still getting comfortable in the Jets’ new offense . . .
By the way, these two TD completions were on CB Daryl Roberts.
I’m sorry to break this news to Jets fans, but the Jets cornerback play in camp hasn’t been stellar.
While Roberts has great speed, and is tough, he’s wildly inconsistent, and has average eyes in coverage.
To me, he’s not a starting CB candidate. He’s more like a dime back.
He’s a great kid and works very hard, but Justin Burris is having a sub-par training camp. He got beat soundly down the left sideline by Robby Anderson for a long gain. Look, I understand that Anderson is going to beat a lot of guys deep. The play happened right in front of me, and Burris really looked like he was lumbering on this play. I have said it before, and I will say it again, Burris is better suited to the safety spot in the NFL.
Buster Skrine has been very inconsistent this summer (though he did have a nice PD in the Titans’ game), and doesn’t look like a starting cornerback to me.
Nobody has emerged from that cornerback room and has grabbed that #2 cornerback job, and if the Jets don’t get a bonafide guy at this spot, it could be a huge problem for them this season.
If I were the Jets, I would call the Saints and see if they can get Delvin Breaux for a late round pick. That cornerback is on the trading block . . .
Perhaps Josh McCown’s best play today came on a pass to Marquess Wilson with Burris in coverage.
It was a perfectly executed back shoulder throw down the left sideline for about 20 yards. It was one of those routes were the receiver acted like he was going deep, knowing all along the throw was coming to his back shoulder as he was running deep. He cut off his route and made the catch.
Wilson is the X-Factor in the Jets’ wide receiver room. He’s a big receiver with a large wingspan with NFL experience from his time in Chicago. His problem in Chicago was health, breaking his left foot three times. If he can finally stay healthy, he should help the Jets a great deal . . .
Another example of why training camp media QB stats are misleading. Late in practice, in a red-zone drill, McCown, perhaps on a hot-read, made a perfect throw to rookie running back Eli McGuire on the right goalline for what would have been a touchdown. The pass hit McGuire in the helmet. He didn’t turn around. McCown did exactly what he should on this play, and the rookie, still learning, wasn’t alert. McCown will be given an incompletion by the media on this play, but this wasn’t his fault.
