A heaping helping of Friday Night Whispers from Florham . . .

Some have speculated that if the Jets lose to Cleveland, Aaron Glenn could be in trouble.

I have no information on that.

Likely only Woody, Chris, Hymie, and Ira would know that.

Anybody else speculating he could be let go if they lose to Cleveland is making that up out of whole cloth.

I don’t get into firing people in print or on the radio. Never have, never will.

I will leave that to others, but the reason it would be shocking to imagine the Jets firing Glenn if they lost to Cleveland is the amount of money they would owe him.

Connor Hughes, perhaps the preeminent New York pro football insider, announced on a podcast that Glenn makes “close to $12 million a year.”

So if they fired him now, Woody would have to pay him over $40 million. NFL coaching contracts are guaranteed.

Not sure Woody would want to do that, or his financial advisor, Ira, would recommend it.

Ticket sales don’t seem to be robust, and they are currently doing a massive, expensive renovation of their Florham Park training complex that is going to take the next couple of years. It’s a big project.

So it would be shocking if they did it if the team lost to Cleveland.

The bottom line is the Browns are a beatable team, and the Jets should be able to win this game. Not saying it will be easy, but they should be able to figure out a way to win.

But one thing they must do to have a chance is fix their run defense, which was atrocious the last two weeks. It’s hard to win in the NFL when you can’t stop the run.

I honestly believe if they stop the run this week, the other things will fall into place, and they will win this game, and the speculation about Glenn’s job security will go away, at least temporarily.

But once again, there is no information that they are even thinking of doing that. None. It’s pure speculation based on nothing.

And I’m not pushing for anybody to be fired. I don’t go down that rabbit hole. Just saying it would cost Woody a fortune to move on from his head coach right now, and keep in mind after the owner fired Steve Wilks, he reportedly had to write a big check to the team’s former DC . . .

The Jets should have WR Tim Patrick available at wide receiver on Sunday. The veteran wideout missed the first month of the season with a groin injury.

The 6-4, 210-pound receiver is very underrated.

He played very well for Denver early in his career, earning a nice payday, but then got bit by the injury bug his last two years with the Broncos – suffering a torn ACL in 2022 and an Achilles injury in 2023.

For the most part, he was healthy the last two years, playing for Detroit and Jacksonville.

He’s a big, physical receiver who if very good on 50-50 balls, in the red zone, and is a terrific blocker . . .

At practice on Friday, linebacker Demario Davis brought the defense together before practice and gave them a fire-and-brimstone speech.

Davis is considered a great leader who Rex Ryan once compared to Ray Lewis when it comes to the linebacker’s leadership ability . . .

On Thursday, ESPN’s Rich Cimini asked Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich the following question about the team’s offensive performance in Chicago:

Cimini: The disparity, like the 89-to-32 disparity in plays. Do you feel bad for the defense? As an offensive coach, your counterpart’s unit is out there pretty much the whole time. How do you feel as an offensive coach when something like that happens?

Reich: Everybody will tell you as a player and as a coach, the number one thing, maybe the number one motivator for all guys in this league is you don’t want to let your teammate down.

There was more to Reich’s answer, but that was the gist of it.

You could argue that while the offense deserves some blame for that play discrepancy, so does the defense.

Aside from going 0-7 on third down, another reason the Jets ran so few plays and possessed the ball for just 17:15 seconds was how awful the their run defense was.

So the run defense let down the defense as much as the offense did, and was a big reason the Bears possessed the ball for an astounding 43:45 in this game. While the Jets offense wasn’t great, the defense couldn’t get off the field, giving the offense more possessions . . .

It will be interesting to see whether the brace Mason Taylor is wearing on his thumb affects his blocking or receiving on his return Sunday.

Aaron Glenn was asked today about whether WR AD Mitchell’s finger injury has kept him out longer than expected, and said, “Well, when it comes to receiver, and you talk about a finger, I mean those things can vary when it comes to difficulty as far as catching the ball and the pain tolerance.”

That is a fair point, but the first thing I thought when he said that was about Taylor’s thumb and how that will impact him, especially catching the ball.

We shall see . . .
