Quite honestly, this is a non-story right now.
Talking about Quincy Williams’ contract situation.
Somebody on the internet pointed out the disparity with linebacker Jamien Sherwood now makes $15 million a year, and Williams making $6 million a year.
Obviously some might consider this an awkward situation because Williams is the more established player, but it’s not as awkward as some would lead you to believe.
Why?
Because as Aaron Glenn said in the spring, Williams has some things to work on.
“I told Quincy when he first came and met with me, there are some things that I want him to work on, and he is doing everything he can to get better at those things,” Glenn said. “Listen, I don’t lie to players, and he’s a really good player, but there are also some things that he’s got to get better at, and he understands that.”
Sometimes the hype superseded the film. Williams is one of the biggest hitters in the league and a terrific blitzer, but he must improve in coverage and not run around blocks so much in run support.
Look, everyone has something to work on. I’m not looking to go after Williams, who is tough as bootleather and a high-character guy, but the way he’s been covered the last few years, you might not have known he has some things to work on.
And it wasn’t just the coverage, but the old staff acted like this guy was beyond reproach (at least publicly), when in fact, he had some things to work on.
New linebacker coach Aaron Curry, who played the position on the NFL level, should be a boon to Williams’ game.
So while it is strange to see Sherwood making that much more than Williams this year, it’s unlikely the Jets are going to do anything to adjust that at this time, because while Glenn likes Williams as a player, the player has some work to do . . .
Steve Serby asked Garrett Wilson today – “What makes you believe that Aaron Glenn is the right man at the right time for his franchise?”
