The tradition continues . . .
of rookies carrying the pads of veterans off the field.
Saw Alijah Vera-Tucker carrying the pads of Connor McGovern and Corey Levin.
This has been going on for years, and it’s kind of a rite of passage, but wasn’t sure if it was still around . . .
It’s a good time for the Jets to have an off-day tomorrow, because guys were going down with injuries today left and right. Guard Alex Lewis left practice early and was taken to the locker room, so that is the fourth offensive linemen to get hurt this week – Vera-Tucker (pec), Cam Clark (back) and Chuma Edoga (knee). And it looked like rookie free agent offensive tackle Teton Saltes got hurt, and was being worked on by a trainer, but he fought through whatever it was and returned to practice.
Tight end Daniel Brown was taken to the locker room, and cornerback Brandon Echols suffered some kind of leg injury, and was being attended to by trainers, but returned to practice, however was clearly limping.
Also leaving practice was wide receiver Manessah Bailey, with some kind of leg injury.
DE John Franklin-Myers also left practice early.
So it’s a good time for a day off . . .
Justin Hardee was brought in for his special team’s excellence, but he continues to flash at his natural position, cornerback, which he hardly got a chance to play his first four years in New Orleans. He had a nice PD on a quick slant late in today’s practice.
While the Jets need him to continue the special team’s dominance he displayed with the Saints, he could be making a case to get some time at cornerback, a position the Jets definitely need depth . . .
Marcus Maye had a nice PD on a crossing route to Corey Davis from Zach Wilson.
I have been trying to find out what the Jets best offer to Maye was before he settled for playing on the franchise tag ($10.612 million).
The only thing I was told by a league source is that Maye’s camp considered it a bad offer, and they also didn’t blame Joe Douglas, but more the Jet cap guy/contract negotiator and ownership.
But it’s hard to believe that Douglas wasn’t heavily involved in what they offered Maye.
The offer was reportedly for $9 million per year, but nobody has yet to unearth how much was guaranteed.
If I were to guess a contract that was similar to what the Jets offered, it was probably the deal that Jimmie Ward got from San Francisco – a three-year deal for $28.5 million with $16 million guaranteed. Ward was a favorite of Robert Saleh in San Francisco.
Tough situation for Maye not getting a long-term deal, but you have to wonder if he should have taken the Jets’ offer, considering he will be 29 next year, not an age generally safeties get paid big in free agency, and what if he gets hurt this year? . . .
Zach Wilson is finding out very quickly that the throwing window he was used to against BYU’s opponents like Central Florida, Western Kentucky and Troy, rarely happen on the NFL level. He was nearly picked off on a deep pass he threw late. He can’t throw deep passes late into tight coverage in the NFL, no matter how strong his arm is.
He had another throw that was more like it, throwing a perfect timing route to Corey Davis on a deep out, with the ball in the air when the player made his cut. That was a true NFL throw right there.
Throwing late over the middle is a recipe for disaster, and he’s a fast learner, so he should learn that fast . ..
The Jets’ corners, a lot of taller DBs with long legs, are having a tough time dealing with Elijah Moore coming out of his breaks, with the talented Ole Miss product cutting away from guys with regularity . . .
LB Brendon White. who was waived yesterday to make room for QB Josh Johnson got an injury settlement. As we reported here, he had a cast on one of his hands, on the practice field, a couple of day ago . . .
Saw this Dunkin Donut truck (pictured above) dropping off supplies at Jets camp today. Coaches certainly need it this time of year, with super-long hours in training camp.
