With this player out,
Alex Lewis, the Jets started Josh Andrews (6-2, 298) at left guard, and this might not have been the way to go. He’s undersized, and was getting overwhelmed today. They had other options, guys with better size, like Conor McDermott, Jimmy Murray and Cam Clark.
This was head-scratcher.
Why they went with Andrews over McDermott, Murray or Clark is something I can’t explain, but there have been a lot of bizarre “game-day personnel decisions” this year.
Notice I said “game-day personnel decisions.” Yes, Joe Douglas has control over the roster, but not over who plays on game-day. That is the coaches.
This wasn’t a good decision, and they should have kept that in mind when they ran up the middle on fourth-and-one, and failed, in the second quarter . . .
Speaking of bad decisions, Sam Darnold threw into triple-coverage on his pick at end of the first half on a deep out. You could possibly say quadruple coverage because there was a linebacker also in the area.
Chris Herndon was open on a shallow crossing route, but Darnold didn’t only looked one place – his head never came off his first read, Jeff Smith.
I’m not saying the play-calling is top-shelf, but Darnold also needs a lot of work on going though his progressions better. He too often telegraphs passes to his first read . . .
In the summer, Jets special teams coach Brant Boyer was asked why he wasn’t going to use rookie punter Braden Mann on kickoffs, something he did in college, and he said he felt that kicking off would mess up his punting swing, and that was very prescient of the coach, Today Mann handled kickoffs with Sam Ficken out, and had a poor day punting . . .
This one player, a media favorite, continues to struggle setting the edge against the run, but Gregg Williams keeps rolling with him, no matter what. Strange. Once again, one of those “game-day personnel decisions” that is baffling. There are a lot of those, and once again, Douglas has nothing to do with them.
Like remember in Buffalo, in the opener, when Williams benched Pierre Desir for Nate Hairston? Hairston is no longer with the team. Or Lamar Jackson starting over Bless Austin against Arizona. Made no sense.
This guy, who struggles setting the edge, I’m not sure there’s anything that could lead to him getting replaced, and this kind of decision-making is what 0-7 looks like.
The Jets desperately need a football czar to oversee the football operation. You can’t have a defensive coordinator, who has so much power on that side of the ball, that he’s not only calling plays, but he’s in essence the defensive player personnel director . . .
Sam Darnold didn’t trust his eyes in the second half . . .
You’d have to think, at this point, the Jets keeping Adam Gase, is a financially-driven.
Perhaps they just don’t want to eat the contract at this point, after eating the Le’Veon Bell money, and with no stadium revenue coming in.
And please don’t say there are no interim candidates. That’s a crock. Did Houston and Atlanta promote Vince Lombardi and Bill Parcells to interim coach?
You don’t need Nick Saban on your staff to have an interim candidate.
I’m not saying they should fire Gase, I don’t fire coaches, I’m just trying to address what’s likely on all your minds right now . . .
You see assistant coaches doing a lot of hobnobbing pregame with coaches from the other team. Today was no different. You have to keep these relationships strong because they might need another job, soon. Surely, Jets assistant coaches, are a little concerned about their job security now, and understandably so . . .
There were zero reporters from Western New York at the game day. Zero . . .
