It would be shocking if the Jets, even with all their issues right now, will be winless after the next three games – Carolina, Cincinnati, and Cleveland.
All three are beatable teams
Not looking ahead, but next week, when they travel to Cincinnati, the Bengals will be without tight end Mike Gesicki, who was placed on IR with a pectoral injury.
This will certainly help the Jets’ cause in this game, as they have continued to struggle covering tight ends, similar to the previous couple of seasons. Against Miami and Dallas, the Jets gave up a pair of TDs to tight ends in each game, and then against Denver, tight end/fullback Nate Atkins was left wide open for a score.
So the Bengals not having the speedy, athletic 6-6 Gesicki, a Jersey Shore native, in their contest against the Jets next week will certainly help Gang Green’s defense.
Speaking of the Bengals game, the Jets signed wide receiver Trenton Irwin to their practice squad. He spent the last six seasons with the Bengals, and he certainly could provide insight on the Cincinnati schemes next week . . .
Once again, Woody, Christopher, Ira, and Hymie, the Jets’ top decision-makers, can’t fall for the “this takes time” excuse for the team’s 0-6 start.
“Everybody wants to make sure they have a winning record,” Aaron Glenn said. “But here’s the thing that was not heard from the very beginning. We’re not talking about the Super Bowl. We’re trying to build a foundation of making sure that we win consistently.”
He added, “I’ve been through that with Detroit. I’ve been through that in New Orleans.”
Once again, not calling for anyone to be fired, just saying that this “it takes time to build a foundation” narrative can’t be the excuse for the team’s 0-6 record.
Look, I’m not arguing the fact that this is a small part of the equation. Of course, any first-year program is looking to build a foundation, but first-year programs like Jacksonville, Chicago, and New England are also looking to build foundations, but they are also winning some games along the way. Heck, even Las Vegas, not a particularly talented team, aside from a few guys (Crosby, Bowers, Jeanty), has managed to win two games.
So it’s the Jets’ power quartet should not hang their hat on “it times time.” That would be dangerous. There is more to the issues with this team right now than the theory – “Rome (Florham Park) wasn’t built in a day.”
Caveat emptor on blaming everything on that . . .
Jets running back Khalil Herbert is a dual citizen of the United States and the British Virgin Islands, and the British Virgin Islands are still part of Great Britain, not independent, so when the Jets went to England last week, his paperwork was a little different than other players. He’s theoretically a British citizen. Herbert’s father is from the British Virgin Islands, and Khalil’s brother is a track athlete who represents the BVI in competitions . . .
Veteran backup swing tackle Chukwuma Okorafor has become a mentor to Jets rookie tackle Armand Membou. The two are always seen together.
Okorafor, who has started 60 games in Pittsburgh and New England, mostly at right tackle, is very bright, and knows a ton about playing Membou’s position on the NFL level. Terrific guy for Membou to lean on.
Also, Okorafor was born in Nigeria, and Membou’s parents are from Cameroon, so they both have strong roots in the African continent, which gives them another strong connection . . .
The Breece Hall trade rumors really don’t make a lot of sense.
First of all, Braelon Allen might be out for the year after being used on a kick return and hurting his knee, and Hall is one of the Jets’ most talented players.
You don’t win by constantly letting talented players leave, and aside from a few fumbles, he’s having a good year. Yes, his contract is up after the year, but you can always slap him with the franchise tag next year, which is not a crazy number at the RB position.
As for the fumbles, they are not ideal, but most running backs are going to have some fumbles. It happens at the position with all the hits you take and all the guys punching at the ball these days. Look at what has been going on with Derrick Henry this year.
It would be pretty foolish to trade Hall, especially with Allen out.
Isaiah Davis is a nice player who contributes in a lot of ways, but is he an NFL featured back at this point?
Not sure . . .
Seeing Garrett Wilson today, he looked like he was walking with a slight limp.
He’s probably a long shot to play this week.
Brian Costello and Aaron Glenn had another uncomfortable exchange today, this time over Wilson’s availability this week.
Remember, after the Jets’ loss to Denver, Glenn took umbrage with Costello’s question about whether he’s considering a QB change.
It’s been an interesting year with the new coach and the media . . .
