I’m not putting him in Canton
but Mike White looks pretty good to me.
As you know by now, Zach Wilson wasn’t at the Jets’ first training camp practice today due to a contract dispute over off-set language. In other words, if he get cut before his rookie deal is up, he can’t double-dip, and collect the rest of his Jets’ contract, and the new money from a new team. The Jets want off-set language and obviously he and his agent don’t want it.
So with Wilson not in camp yet, White was the Jets’ starting QB, and continued to do what he did last summer and this spring, go through his progressions smoothly and distribute the ball to playmakers.
Unlike other young quarterbacks, he doesn’t panic if his first read isn’t open, but smoothly moves his head to his second or third read.
It looks like the Jets have something here.
The true test will be how he does in preseason games against a real pass rush. One concern about him in college (South Florida and Western Kentucky) was related to pocket presence, vis-a-vis dealing with the pass rush.
Perhaps this is the only place you are reading this, but White has been impressive. He’s 6-5, 225, with a good arm, and like I mentioned, is good going through his progressions scans, something Sam Darnold struggled with.
And by the way, he outplayed Darnold in camp last year.
I’m not saying White is going to beat out Wilson. All I’m saying is this guy looks like a legit #2 QB candidate based on how he looked on the practice field, last year and in 2021.
Now it’s just a matter of seeing how he deals with an opposing pass rushers, with bad intentions, coming after him in preseason games.
White came into the league as a fifth-round pick of Dallas in 2018, so he was drafted.
He’s clearly ahead of James Morgan at this point.
White had a couple of nice connections with Elijah Moore today, and a terrific connection with tight end Chris Herndon on a deep out. White can drive the all-important deep out, which is something you must be able to do on the NFL level . . .
White had a nice connection with Corey Davis on a quick slant, and this was a terrific grab by Davis. He was unflinching going over the middle into an area with a lot of defenders. While there was no tackling right now, you can wrap guys up like a tackle, and he had zero hesitiation going over the middle, where a lot of receivers get alligator arms . ..
Obviously Marcus Maye and LeMarcus Joyner are going to be the starting safeties, but don’t be so quick to anoint Ashtyn Davis for the #3 spot. First of all, he hasn’t practiced in 2021, in the spring or today, after having foot surgery. Also, J.T. Hassell continues to make his presence known, and had the most impressive defensed pass today, knocking a way a throw down the right seam.
Hassell is smart, fast and a true inspiration, playing football missing three fingers on one hand due to a birth defect . . .
First time seeing Morgan Moses at a Jets practice, and he certainly looks the part – Moses is 6’6″, weighs 314 lbs, and has really long arms (very important an offensive tackle) – 34 ¾” arms.
Saw him talking to Mekhi Becton a few times on the practice field. The veteran Moses is going to be a big help to Becton, and the two already have a strong bond, both coming from Richmond, VA.
