How many times are we going to hear, from people outside the offices at 1 Jets Drive, that the Jets need to add a receiver to complement Garrett Wilson?
It’s a story that seems to have no expiration date, even though the team just had to cut four talented receivers to reach the 53-man limit.
It doesn’t matter that they just cut a 2024 third-round pick, Malachi Corley, because they were overloaded in that room.
It doesn’t matter that they moved their top-performing receiver in camp, Brandon Smith, to the practice squad, in a surprising move, considering how he performed in camp.
They also moved veteran wide receiver Tyler Johnson, who they gave $367,500 in guaranteed money in a one-year deal worth $1,337,500, to the practice squad.
They also cut two other training camp standouts at receiver, rookies Quinton Skinner and Jamal Pritchett, and moved them to the practice squad as well.
So, with all these challenging cuts in the receiver room, because they had excess talent at the position, why would they now go out and make a trade for another wideout?
Josh Reynolds is a rock-solid #2 receiver; he’s proven that over the course of his first eight years in the league.
Allen Lazard is a good 3A, speedster Arian Smith is a good 3B, and the team’s punt returner, Xavier Gipson, can help them in the slot.
And keep in mind, they intend to throw to the backs and tight ends a ton.
Also, they have a QB who often throws to his first read.
So, all these things considered, why the constant drum-pounding for the Jets to add another receiver?
