Spring practices are very important for teaching, installing, camaraderie and conditioning, but be careful putting players in Canton based on big plays they make in mini-camps.
“The execution on air is different than the execution when you have a defense out there and the coverages change and those types of things,” said Jets coach Todd Bowles. “In pads, you’ll get to see the live blitz pick-ups and those things and see whether the backs can block or get run over, whether the linemen can pass off defensive linemen and whether the defense can see the hots and peel on the backs, so you’ll get to see that live.”
And just like you shouldn’t praise players too much for big plays in the spring, you shouldn’t rip players too much for bad plays.
