New Jersey – We will likely get a needed respite from the quarterback talk this week. Also, bulletin-board fodder from a rookie isn’t a great idea . . .
You know who described the Jets’ quarterback situation the best – not John Idzik, Rex Ryan, Marty Mornhinweg, Vick or Smith.
To me, it was actually quarterback Tajh Boyd, at an NFL rookie event, a couple of weeks ago.
“Geno has been pretty much … he’s been the offense,” Boyd told NFL.com. “You know, right now, it’s his team. But, I mean, at the end of the day, you want to go out there and do everything that’s possible to win.
“If Geno gives us the best chance to win, he’s going to start. If Mike gives us the best chance to win, he’ll start.”
Perfect.
It’s Geno’s job now. He’s the incumbent. Also, he needs more reps than Vick in the spring because he’s still a young, developing quarterback.
BUT, if it’s clear in the summer, whether it’s in preseason games, or training camp practices, that Smith is struggling, and holding the team back in a must-win season, Vick could emerge in perhaps late August.
So to me, Boyd laid out what is going on here better than anyone.
“Right now, it’s his team.”
Bingo.
“If Geno gives us the best chance to win, he’s going to start. If Mike gives us the best chance to win, he’ll start.”
Bingo . . .
Once a week during OTA’s, the practice is open to the media. This week that day is on Wednesday.
Alert – Geno Smith and Michael Vick WILL NOT address the media this week.
Thanks goodness.
This story needs a break.
Competition, no competition, competition, not competition
I think we are all getting a headache from this confusing narrative.
It was a good decision by the Jets to give them both a break this week from the press . . .
Sometimes we forget out how young some of these guys are.
Calvin Pryor is only 21 years old
I don’t know about y’all, but when I was 21, I didn’t have a lot of things figured out yet.
Pryor went on SNY last week, and said, “We don’t like Tom (Brady) at all. When I first came here, that was one of the first things I heard about: We hate the Patriots, and we hate the Giants. That’s what everybody was telling me. We hate those guys, and I look forward to playing them this season.”
And I’m sure Brady is looking forward to facing the rookie safety.
Hey, Pryor is a heck of prospect, not just a big-time hitter, but good in coverage.
However, he’s not playing the FIU’s of the world anymore.
Brady is going to go after him, manipulate him with his eyes, have his targets beat him with double-moves.
It’s hard enough to win in this league without providing your opponents bulletin-board fodder, and Belichick loves using this stuff. He even embellishes quotes sometimes to fire up his players.
“With me being a rookie, that doesn’t mean anything,” Pryor said. “I am who I am. I’m going to talk trash. I’m going to be myself. People who don’t like it are just going to have to get used to it.”
No they don’t. The Jets need to tell him to pipe down, and let his play do the talking.
Light up players with big hits, not with big quotes.
This kind of talk isn’t helpful to the Jets’ cause.
But then again, he’s only 21. He will learn.
And I’m sure the PR department had a little chat with him after this SNY appearance.
