Indianapolis – Strange game tonight at Lucas Oil Field. Who’d a thunk that the Jets would score just 17 points against a team so ravaged at cornerback . . .
When coaches or players tell you that sacks are overrated, maybe we should believe them the next time they say it.
The Jets had no sacks tonight.
Can you believe that?
Yet, they put pressure on Andrew Luck all night, hit him about a dozen times, and made his life miserable. He was never comfortable in the pocket.
Yes, sacks can be misleading . . .
I’m still shocked the Jets managed just 17 points against a team with three of their top corners inactive, and then they lost their #1 cornerback, Vontae Davis, in the second quarter, to a concussion, suffered tackling Bilal Powell.
One of the Colts’ starting cornerbacks tonight, Jalil Brown, has been waived six times since coming into the league.
On the Jets’ first drive, Eric Decker had two catches being covered by linebackers.
“He found the seams in the zone coverage,” said Ryan Fitzpatrick.
On the Jets’ second possession, he caught a TD, and was basically uncovered.
“It was a good play design by Chan,” said Fitzpatrick about the touchdown
When you consider who the Colts had at cornerback, it’s really surprising the Jets couldn’t do more in the passing game, and put up just 17 points
“We left a lot of meat on the bone,” said Brandon Marshall.
I think the Jets might a strategic error in the first half. Instead of forcing passes to Brandon Marshall being covered by one of the game’s best corners, Vontae Davis, they should have just kept feeding Decker until they stopped it.
Throwing Marshall open against Davis was a mistake. Davis is a lot bigger and more physical than Joe Haden. What was working against Haden, didn’t work against Davis.
It was almost like the Jets felt they needed to keep Marshall involved because he’s a superstar, and they were forcing stuff that wasn’t there.
When Davis was out of the picture in the second half, and Marshall was being covered by Sheldon Price, going to him a lot made sense.
But forcing stuff to him in the first half, perhaps to a certain degree to appease him, wasn’t the way to go.
When a team basically has one good corner (Davis), and the rest are journeymen, keep throwing at the journeymen, not Davis .. .
Jets defensive ends Mo Wilkerson and Leonard Williams were dominant tonight.
The Colts guards are pedestrian, and Mo and Leo took advantage.
And if you thought these guards were average, wait until you see the Eagles guards next week – Andrew Gardner and Allen Barbre. The Colts guards are better.
Chip Kelly was probably watching tonight wondering what the heck he’s going to do next Sunday. Will Shields or John Hannah aren’t coming to town to help him out . . .
Eric Decker is likely going to miss the Jets-Eagles game, but the knee injury he suffered doesn’t seem serious. He wasn’t limping, and said he won’t need surgery . . .
