New Jersey – Time for a helping of Dan’s Jets Whispers heading into the weekend. Some notes on tickets, Braylon, injuries and more. Let’s dive in . . .
I hear the Jets’ ticket sales are sinking.
I’ve always felt two things contribute to issues at the gate (aside from a bad economy).
Obviously losing is #1.
But the second one is a bad offense. Scoring is entertaining. The Jets are scoring-challenged. And this is a passing league now, and they are dead last in passing offense.
Who would want to pay top dollar to see the NFL’s worst passing offense?
Tough sell . . .
Braylon Edwards was criticized for some of his comments on SNY, but he actually made some good points.
“I like Eric Decker in the #2 spot,” said Edwards. “You’ve got to find your #1.”
He’s absolutely right. Decker isn’t a #1. Just because you pay a player decent money, doesn’t make him something he’s not.
He’s a solid player, but not a star.
And he’s a little bit of a hired gun.
I want to be careful with how I explain this, because I don’t want to cast aspersions on Decker, who is a good guy with solid character.
But he clearly came to the Jets because it was by far the best offer, and who can blame him?
The shelf life for NFL players is very short, and you have to cash in while you can, especially with the all-important second contract. Remember, he was playing for his first four years on his rookie third-round contract. He never really made good NFL money until the Jets’ deal.
I’m sure from a football standpoint, when he’s on the sideline Sunday active or inactive, he will be daydreaming of what was in Denver, like his 24 touchdowns the last two years playing with Peyton Manning.
Watching him in practice, the locker room, games, with the media and so forth, he doesn’t seem to be in love with this scene.
I’m just being honest.
Don’t get me wrong. He works hard. He doesn’t dog it. He will give you a good day at the office.
But to me, his move to the Jets was to get a good pay day.
And who can blame him?
The Jets need to run the ball this week to help Geno Smith and keep Peyton Manning off the field. But this is going to be very tough to do. The Broncos are very good against the run. Getting defensive linemen Von Miller and Derek Wolfe back from injuries, has certainly helped . . .
Seeing him moving around today, my sense is that David Nelson plays this week.
One thing important to note about Nelson’s ankle injury – it’s not a high ankle sprain, so with ton of treatment, a good tape job, and perhaps a Toradol shot, he should be able to get out there . . .
Josh Bush is doubtful with a calf injury.
He’s a very nice guy, but I’m not just not seeing a lot going on there, aside from calling the signals for the punter.
I’m not seeing it . . .
