We think way different than they do. But unfortunately, we constantly get to pump our dangerous theorems into their heads . . .
How many of you fall for clickbait?
Definition – “Content, especially that of a sensational or provocative nature, whose main purpose is to attract attention and draw visitors to a particular web page.”
You see this all the time
Headline – “Todd Bowles has to stop running from this Jets embarrassment.”
This was in the Post and had to do with the Jets’ Week 17 loss to Buffalo last year.
No he doesn’t have to stop running.
He needs to run away from it as fast as possible.
It has nothing to do with now.
It’s a different season. Both teams have many new players.
The Jets need to focus on the Jets at hand – beating Buffalo in Week Two of the regular season. That is it. This game has nothing to do with last year.
That is media pablum.
We (the press) get into so many narratives that aren’t on the minds of the players and coaches.
When Breno Giacomini was asked last year about a particular game – “Is this a statement game?”
Giacomini responded, “We don’t think that way.”
That answer could apply to so many other media narratives.
Some other guy wrote recently about Fitz trying to slay the ghost of Joe Namath.
What?
It’s interesting, the only player who kind of went with the import of Week 17 going into this game, was a player who played very poorly that week.
“We have a bad taste in our mouth from last year, and I’m sure that will carry into this game,” cornerback Darrelle Revis said Tuesday.
He’s the only one to go there.
He certainly should have a bad taste. He had issues covering Sammy Watkins that day. He needs to play better this time around.
And maybe the Jets should actually buy into something out of that Week 17 – Revis shouldn’t cover Watkins anymore. I’m serious. He should not cover him. Put Revis on somebody else. Forget what he’s making.
I don’t think players like Darron Lee, Steve McLendon, Lawrence Thomas, Jarvis Jenkins, Bruce Carter, Julian Stanford, Matt Forte, Brandon Bostick, Lac Edwards, Jalin Marshall, Robby Anderson, Jordan Jenkins, Juston Burris or special teams coach Brant Boyer can sleep over what happened last year.
I’m being sarcastic. None of them where with the Jets.
And let me ask everyone a question. If the Jets win in Buffalo, how is that going to help erase that fact they lost a game that would have landed them in the playoffs last year? A Week Two win isn’t going to wipe that out?
The best way to function in sports is what Nick Saban calls “process thinking.” The only thing you worry about is the next game, and then in the game, the next play. Focus on doing your job on every play – just worry about that play.
I feel guilty sometimes being a part of a media that is constantly trying to mess with player’s minds, asking them things they should not be thinking about entering a game.
I don’t know if any of you out there are sports psychologist or have gone to one.
But none of them would suggest to a player to think about the past when trying to do your job in the current game?
You gotta focus on your job.
“Do your job!” as Bill Belichick always says.
And their job in Buffalo is to execute – tackle, block, rush, catch, throw.
Nothing else matters.
